All around I thought that it was an okay book, but nothing special in my eyes. It reminded me of the book that I had read earlier called Daddy, Papa and Me which was written by Newman. The reasons why it reminded me so much of it is because it pretty much had the same concept. It told the story about how having two mommies is not different than having a mother and a father. They still do all the same things that a family with a mother and a father would do together, and they can still teach you all different types of skills.
I thought the pictures were really vibrant and those were the things that stood out to me the most. They were very colorful and caught the attention of the audiences eye. If I had to recommend this book to someone, I would probably recommend it to parents who's children are younger and who are just starting to realize or when the parents want to introduce them and let them know that their family might be a little different than their friends families, and even though it may seem weird, it is all the same because they are still able to teach their children the same things.
Oh The Things Mommies Do!: What Could Be Better Than Having Two? by Crystal Tompkins is a beautiful poem, written in rhyme, for children who have two mothers. The pictures in the poem depict different families with boys and girls, only children and children with siblings, all having two mothers. This book is perfect for introducing the topic of family types to young children. This book shows children that there are many different types of families out there, but no matter the make up of the family, there is still plenty of love to go around. This book is also ideal for children with two mommies, so they can see that there are other families similar to theirs. There is no such thing as a "normal" family, families come in all shapes and sizes, and learning this at a young age will be of extreme importance to children in today's society.
My favorite lines of this book are: “Oh the things mommies do! What could be better than having two?” This book is about children that are living with same sex parents. They talk about activities that their mommies do with them and how proud they are to have two mommies at the same time. The story are fun to read with young children because it has eye catching illustration and show different types of mommies and children that are different in appearances. This book is great because it does not give any stereotypes to any groups indicated in this book. A teacher, parent, or community educator may want to use this book with children so that they can be proud of having two mommies and show them that their families are just like any ordinary families.
A playful book that shows two mom families doing every-day tasks with their kids. Has catchy rhymes about all the wonderful things mommies can do and how amazing it is to have more than one, it also presents multicultural families in a realistic and loving way. Good stepping stone to discuss social issues with kids, as well as diverse family structures.
Reading levels not available, but I think it would be appropriate for K-2.
