If you want an entertaining contemporary crash-course overview of Richard Nixon’s political career and Watergate, then this is the book for you! Is it biased? Unapologetically, yes. This book was published months after Nixon’s resignation, and successfully captures the country’s reaction and outrage precipitated by Watergate. Herblock chronicled Nixon in his cartoons as early as 1948 and uses countless examples from his record in Congress and the White House to illustrate why he thought RMN was unlikeable and unfit for the Presidency. History has a habit of repeating itself as many of the Nixonian tactics documented in this book are still being employed in politics today.
When I was in middle school, in the late 60s, nobody could touch Herblock for insightful and incisive political cartoons. His iconic nuclear bomb warned us all about the consequences of the Cold War. However, his comments on Lyndon Johnson's domestic policy, and those of other important American politicians of the day, were poignant and as true as real life can be. If you are an aficionado of political cartoons, find some of his books!
A true Nixon hater since day 1. First political cartoon of him was a year into his first term as Congressman, and Herblock never let up. An easy to read account with great cartoons, and frankly better commentary on comparing Nixon to today's administration than many contemporary books.
