An old-fashioned story of caring for chickens; I’m not sure if today’s children would relate. But now that urban homesteading is up and coming, perhaps they would. Another sweet and innocent entry in the series.

There are children's picture books that stand the test of you turning past the age of five. There are those children's books that don't. And then there are those that you wonder how it ever got published. It may not be a bad book, but it does tend to bring up the question of what small child, or adult, for that matter, wants to read about 3 Swedish girls taking care of their neighbor's chickens, one of whom goes missing but is discovered to have had baby chicks in the interim, and then the girls will get to to have those chicks for their very own and name one Masie, but only if it is a red hen.

There. You've read the book. Were you entertained?

The girls are left to care for chickens and one of the hens gets away. As with the cat, the hen returns - with babies! Something about being in the care of these girls leads to childbirth, and I don't know what kind of message that sends to children.

I’m officially obsessed!! Flicka, Ricka, and Ducks are even more fabulous than Snipp, Snapp, and Snurr. Wonderfully illustrated and delightfully written early reader books about Swedish farm life. Oh why oh why can’t I find these in svenska though??!

A charming story of three little Swedish girls who take care of their aunt's chicken while she goes away. What a surprise it is when suddenly one of the hens has some baby chicks.

Thorough but for the fact that Maj Lindman forgot to include the rooster's being brought to the girls's house, therefore throwing me for a good loop when the red hen returns with a bunch of chicks. No rooster, no chicks. But at the end the issue of the rooster does get resolved. I recommend this book for children today so they can understand how a chicken, under non-commercial circumstances, eats and lives.

I remember reading many of the Flicka, Ricka and Dicka books aloud to my first two daughters in the mid '80s. The girls LOVED them. It's nice to know that some of these cute books are back in print.

I love the Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka books and found this one very nice as well. However, I did not read this one when I was little so I did not find it quite as special as the others.
