Being blind doesn’t stop seventeen-year-old Jenny Ryan from going after what she wants. Journalism byline? Horse sports? Rock climbing? No problem. Meet Liam O’Shannon, frontman for hard-rocking Irish band (also named) O’Shannon? Jenny’s got a plan for that, too.

She’s already landed a backstage pass for the Portland tour stop where she hopes to interview her idol for a write up in her school paper. Instead, she finds herself in an unexpected convo with the band’s junior publicist, Jamie Conway. Not exactly her dream. But Jamie is sweet and thoughtful and later offers to arrange an interview for her with Liam.

Throughout the tour, he and Jenny keep in touch, and their long-distance friendship deepens into something that challenges Liam’s place in her heart. What Jenny can’t see is the truth Jamie’s disguising; one that will shatter the growing trust between them and force her to question everything she knew about him—and what it truly means to love someone.

I can’t remember if I read a book solely from blind person’s point of view. It was an interesting experience to read a story through that narrative. We don’t see what she sees physically, but we see it through scents, touching and feelings, and picture the world around her. I enjoyed the sweet romance between Jenny and Jamie, and her friendship with her close friend and her family. Overall it was a good YA sweet romance read with disability representation. I recommend it.

See Me As I Am is a slow burn romance with a strong, multi-faceted female protagonist. Although the main character, Jenny, is blind that doesn’t define her or her goals, which include writing about music and especially her favorite Irish rock band.

So when she scores an opportunity to meet some of the band members at their Portland concert, she’s psyched, but this event thrusts Jenny into unknown territory that will require every bit of inner strength she can muster to overcome the disappointments and uncertainties in front of her.

One of the band’s hit songs, “Tearing Down the Walls,” seemed to me a symbolic theme for the story as walls are built and destroyed in Jenny’s life - when she becomes blind, when her family is upended by divorce, and when her love is not who he seems to be and Jenny is thrown into turmoil, but her resiliency is nothing short of inspirational. She is a character who will resonate with readers.

This fast-paced story showcases debut author Cheryl Wanner’s creativity and talent.

See Me As I Am is Cheryl Wanner’s debut novel and let me say, I’m already hooked. Seriously. I read this on vacation and it was hard to put the book down to go to the beach. See Me As I Am is an endearing, slow-burn romance that felt good to read. This doesn’t mean Jenny Ryan, our protagonist, doesn’t encounter problems.
First, Jenny lost her sight in a horse-riding accident at 13. At 13! What thirteen-year-old would handle this well? Not me, I can assure you, and Jenny isn’t an exception. As she struggled to accept the change in her life, her parents disagree about how to help her navigate these changes and their marriage falls apart. Feeling guilty for her parents’ divorce, at seventeen, Jenny is still hoping to find a way to reunite her parents. But her mom and the guy she’s now dating, Bryan, are getting serious. Like, marriage serious.
While Jenny navigates the complexities of family life, she’s also pursing her dream to become a journalist. In an assignment for her school newspaper, Jenny secures an interview with her favorite band, O’Shannon. Unknowingly, Jenny interviews the lead singer and her crush, Liam, who pretends to be an assistant publicist for O’Shannon. As Jenny interacts with the assistant publicist, who is really her crush Liam, their relationship grows. But Liam never reveals his true identity. Cue the drama.
In See Me As I Am, the author handled the blindness of Jenny in such an intelligent way. I learned a lot about what life is like for someone with impaired sight. The resilience and heart of the Jenny carried the story and her relationship with Liam was sweet. I see myself re-reading this story soon while I wait for more books by Cheryl Warner.

“See Me As I Am” by Cheryl Wanner is an absolutely precious read that consumed me from page one. From dynamic, interesting characters to a gripping plot, this story is a must read for YA romance readers!

Between the threat of her mother getting remarried, the beginnings of a career in music journalism, and doing it all blind, Main character Jenny Ryan has a lot on her plate. Her world is shaken up further when she attends a concert for her favorite Irish metal band, O’Shannon, and enters into a long distance friendship with someone on the band’s team. The friendship spirals into more until Jenny finds out that he isn’t quite who he says he is.

Jenny is a strong, well written protagonist who’s characterization is consistent and likable. Her love of her favorite band and best friend Morgan make for a realistic and relatable teenage character. Jenny’s love interest, Liam, is also so endearing in his kindness and genuine care for Jenny. While he makes some pretty big mistakes in this story, he makes up for it in an earnest desire to do right by Jenny.

As a young woman with a disability, there is nothing I love more than to see literature that features well-rounded, strong, disabled characters like Jenny. She is unapologetically herself without being perfect, which creates a well rounded, relatable main character. So often, authors will write a disabled character whose entire life and personality revolves around their disability, reducing them to only that, but Cheryl Wanner created a character who is much more than that. Cheryl also takes every opportunity to educate readers on blindness, which is a wonderful thing to see.

Overall I’m rating this book a 5/5 stars simply because it does exactly what great literature should, thoroughly entertains while educating.

A huge thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC of SEE ME AS I AM.

SEE ME AS I AM is the story of Jenny Ryan, a high school student who was blinded in an accident five years ago. An aspiring music journalist and prolific blogger, she’s thrilled when she’s granted an interview with a member of her favorite band. She never expected to strike up a friendship with the band’s new, young publicist, Jamie—or for their friendship to blossom into something more. Despite the long-distance nature of their relationship, she’s determined to make it work…until she discovers Jamie has been keeping a life-changing secret from her.

I finished this book several days ago, and I’m still thinking about it! It has all the things I look for in a YA contemporary novel: sweet romance, excellent writing, a strong female character, swoon-worthy love interest, complex family dynamics—and best of all, strong disability representation. I’m blown away that this is the author’s debut!

I was amazed by Jenny’s strength and positivity, and the way she refused to allow her blindness to define her. She doesn’t let her disability hold her back, and it was so inspiring to see her go after what she wants. I learned a great deal about assistive technology for the visually impaired and the ways in which Jenny uses her other senses to guide her. The details felt incredibly authentic.

I was completely engaged by the unique storyline, the well-drawn supporting cast of characters, and the beautifully described Oregon setting.

SEE ME AS I AM is a moving romance about resilience, acceptance, and following your heart. I highly recommend!

Cheryl Wanner’s debut novel See Me as I Am is an endearing slow-burn romance starring blind protagonist, Jenny. Jenny spends her time blogging, hoping to make it in the journalism industry so she can write about the bands she loves. Only Jenny doesn’t expect to fall in love when she does.

Not only is Jenny trying to break into her dream job, but her mom plans to remarry. Jenny still longs for her parents to get back together because she wants to see her dad happy, but she feels it’s her fault they divorced in the first place. While her realization that their reunion may never happen unfolds, Jenny has to learn to let go of that dream and trust her parents can be happy separate.

Jenny is able to put her Mom’s wedding out of her mind as she becomes entrenched in her first romance until a wedge drives between them, threatening to break them apart. When Jenny finally has the chance to stand front row to watch her favorite band O’Shannon, that’s when her life falls apart. Jenny must fly home and face her mom, her mom’s fiance, dad, and best friend. Everything she’s worked so hard for is gone once again.

The rest of the book details Jenny’s efforts to rebuild her life. You can’t help but love Jenny and the cast of characters in See Me as I Am. The lyrics throughout are beautiful, and Jenny’s blog provides deep insight into the life of a blind person.

‘Falling in love is easy… Staying in love takes work. You have to…fight for it with everything you’ve got.’ ['See Me As I Am']

Friends-to-lovers, broken trust, forgiveness, and second chances – this is a YA romance I couldn’t put down!

Jenny Ryan is your typical teenager with all the hopes, doubts, and fears any normal seventeen-year-old experiences. (She’s also blind, after suffering a freak horse-riding accident a few years ago. Yes, she’d wallowed in self-pity for a while, but then she’d realised blindness had only defined her because she’d let it. So, now, anything she wants to do, however adventurous, she does it!)

She’s a daddy’s girl. Although she thinks her mum’s boyfriend is a nice enough person, she dreads their relationship getting more serious because she doesn’t want him as a step-dad. Instead, she wants to get her parents back together, whilst fearing she’s the reason they got divorced in the first place.

She has a best friend who speaks her mind, cheers Jenny on, and who’s always got her back. Not only that, it was Morgan who introduced her to the Irish hard-rock band, O’Shannon, in the first place.

Jenny’s now a huge fan of the band and dreams of meeting and interviewing its frontman, Liam, her heartthrob, for her school newspaper. Instead, she meets Jamie Conway, the band’s assistant publicist – he’s thoughtful, caring, encouraging, and he thinks Jenny’s amazing. They’re on track for the perfect friends-to-lovers relationship. If only he hadn’t lied to her.

This story has been described as a ‘slow burn’ romance – I found it anything but ‘slow’! Every scene is a fast-paced page-turner, and the chemistry between the two main characters sizzles off the page throughout. Jamie is clearly smitten with Jenny from the moment he meets her. Jenny’s emotional enlightenment takes a little longer, mainly because she can’t imagine why Jamie could possibly be interested in a relationship with her, or if he is, how it could possibly work when they live in different countries.

I learnt so much from this story. It was a real eye-opener about a blind person’s life – I especially enjoyed the way the author uses Jenny’s non-visual senses (especially sounds and smells) to describe her world and the people around her. Her pieces for her blog are informative and fascinating in their scope. I also appreciated the story’s musical element – I felt as if I were present in Portland’s Moda Center and in Tacoma Dome, the descriptions were so vivid.

‘See Me As I Am’ is an engaging and uplifting standalone story. I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys a YA romance with great characters who put you through an emotional wringer before they find their happy ending. Five gold stars from me!

At age 13, Jenny Ryan is blinded following a horse-riding accident. By 17, nearly 18, she has finally adjusted to her new life after an intense period of understandable rejection and depression. She’s riding again, in competitions. She uses her phone and computer like any other teenager, goes to parties and to the cinema, and lives a full life.
Her greatest obsession however is with the Irish band, O’Shannon, and their lead singer Liam O’Shannon. When Jenny, who plans to be a journalist, gets the opportunity to interview a band member during their US tour, she is thrilled. But something else happens during the interview which turns out to be the beginning of an emotional, rollercoaster journey for Jenny.
I’m somewhat older than the target reader, yet Jenny’s story drew me in. The highly readable writing style and steady pace kept things moving smartly along. I read this quickly and was engaged throughout. There are also enough clues for the reader to suspect not all is at is seems, but you’re never quite sure about that.
What I also loved were the insights into the world of a young blind woman, with all its difficulties and challenges. Jenny is subject to the doubts of her age and situation. She makes mistakes, she’s obstinate at times. But she’s also brave and resilient, and a heroine we can root for.
I can see young adults loving this, with its fairytale qualities and edge of the seat drama.

I was an early reader of this book, having met Cheryl on Twitter, and I remember messaging her when I was about 50 pages from the end, and I said something like, "I started crying on page X and didn't stop until I reached the end."

Jenny is a blind teen determined to meet the lead singer of O'Shannon, an Irish symphonic metal band fronted by the charismatic Liam O'Shannon, a rising star. Jenny lands the opportunity to interview him after one of their US shows, but Liam isn't an easy person to pin down and the band manager gives her an interview with Jamie Conway instead, the band's publicist. Disappointed, Jenny does the interview and strikes up an unlikely friendship with Jamie, and they keep in touch during the band's tour. When their friendship grows into something more, Jenny learns Jamie is not who she thought he was, and she must decide between following her heart or maintaining her pride in the honesty she demands from those she cares about.

Beautifully written, this story will live in your heart long after you turn the last page. I like to tell Cheryl she missed her call as a songwriter - the song lyrics in this story are hauntingly gorgeous and resonate deeply with emotion. Have a box of tissues handy.

This was a fantastic five star read! YA romance is easily my favorite go-to genre, but this was the first I've read that starred a blind heroine. The author did such a great job with this representation and showcasing all the nuances of being blind. Even experiencing the world through a blind character never left the description or setting lacking, truly a testament to the author's skill and talent.

Jenny herself was a main character I loved following. Her blindness is just a piece of her and she struggles with navigating her first real relationship, her parents' divorce, and all the other pieces of high school life. She was a sweet character, showed real strength, but also felt incredibly real and had to learn from her mistakes to achieve her happily ever after. I couldn't help but cheer her on from the first page!

Jenny's love interest, Liam, was committed and swoony and exactly the steady ground she needed in her chaotic life. Watching the two of them come together and build a relationship despite the two very different worlds they come from was so rewarding. This romance perfectly balanced the bitter and the sweet and makes for the perfect comfort read.

Words cannot describe how much I loved this book!!!

I was initially drawn in by Jenny's voracity, strength, and ability to overcome just about any obstacle the world throws at her—both of the normal teen variety and the not-oft-written challenge of visual impairment. She was immediately likable and admirable, and yet relatable.

The music got me next. I'm a BIG fan of music, especially hard rock and metal, and it's uncommon to find such a deep appreciation and understanding of the genre, especially in young adult pieces. But the descriptions of the melodies, riffs, and vocals just totally blew me away and had me wishing I could hear this band for real, cause I'm pretty sure I'd love them.

The blossoming romance was adorable, and something I was rooting for right from the get-go. And that twist... I started to suspect, but it still hit me hard!

All I can say is WOW! The perfect blend of music, family, friendship, love, trust, and inner strength. This is the book the teen rocker in me needed 20 years ago :)

From the very first page, it's evident that the author possesses a beautiful way with words, allowing readers to immerse themselves effortlessly in the vividly painted scenes.

The prose in this novel is a delightful blend of elegance and simplicity, striking the perfect balance to engage readers without overwhelming them with excessive detail. Each scene comes to life, creating a world that readers can easily visualize and get lost in.

The narrative gracefully unfolds, drawing readers into a carefully crafted world of emotions. Themes of love, loss, disability, and self-discovery are navigated with finesse, adding a poignant emotional core to the story. The author's ability to capture human emotions adds depth to the tale, making it resonate on a personal level with readers.

This enchanting novel is a true gem. If you're looking for a beautifully crafted story that will leave you moved and inspired, I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

I was drawn to purchase this book from an online conversation and hungrily dove into the reading. This was a book that made me stay up late and groggily pay the price the next morning! The dialog is well-paced and moves you through the story of a young woman who has been blind since age 12. Now 17 Jenny is a huge fan of a rock band from Ireland that comes to play in her city. There are twists and turns as family life, the rock band, and somany emotions compete as Jenny becomes the long-distance love interest of the band publicist. This book is labeled YA and will be an enlightening and gripping read for teens. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it if you like romance and action in a realistic coming-of-age story. This one gets 5 stars and an extra coffee for me!

I really enjoyed See Me As I Am by Cheryl Wanner. Jenny felt like such a real and relatable character, confident, stubborn at times, and determined to live life on her own terms. I appreciated that the story didn’t make her blindness her entire personality, but instead showed all the different sides of who she is.

The relationship development was probably my favorite part. The connection between Jenny and Jamie felt natural and genuine, and I liked how their conversations slowly built trust and emotional depth. There were also a few twists that caught me off guard in a good way.

Overall, this was a sweet, emotional YA romance with strong character writing and a lot of heart. Definitely worth reading if you like stories that focus on both personal growth and relationships.

I loved everything about this book, from the romance to the drama to the descriptions from a blind perspective. This story was SO well-written and I hugged it to my chest when it was over because it gave me that perfectly satisfied feeling of everything turning out how it should (even after the emotional rollercoaster it put me through!).

Jenny's character was so absolutely flawless. She was truly a teenage girl, through and through! One that was relatable and made mistakes and worked through them in a healthy way, with the help of a fantastic support system (shout-out to Dad and Brian!). She had a good head on her shoulders and her charactistics were truly shown to us and not told, making her that much more real.

Now, don't even get me started on the love interest! He was wonderful! Yes, he also made mistakes, but wow. I couldn't stay mad at him for even a minute.

One of the best things about this story was reading the insights into the daily life of someone who is blind. I hadn't thought about how a blind person would chop vegetables, or get through an evening of homework, but now I have a much better idea of how people adapt and it's amazing! I have such respect for their resilience.

I loved this story and I will definitely read it again, a long with everything Cheryl Wanner writes in the future!

After Jenny loses her sight at age 13, she must navigate life as a teenager. Cheryl Wanner portrays the struggle, as well as the subsequent acceptance of Jenny's blindness, very authentically.

Jenny's voice jumps off the page, and her wit, strength, and positivity are inspiring. I rooted for Jenny as she fell in love, wanting everything she wanted because she was so loveable from the outset (So is her love interest!).

If you're looking for a good YA Romance with topics of love, music, grit, and trust, this stunning YA debut is for you.

See Me As I Am caught my attention on the first page and did not let it go until long after the last! It left me wanting more of Jenny’s story, but did not disappoint in bringing the various themes in the book together to a powerful conclusion. This novel has it all - romance, excitement, trials, heartache, strong character development, and themes of family and forgiveness. The writing style captures all of my emotion and interest, and I eagerly await anything the Author releases from here on out!

I loved this book! I am far from the YA age group, but I couldn't put the book down. There's so much to be gained from this masterfully written novel that anyone YA and older can enjoy it. I would highly recommend it for the visually impaired readers and even others with handicaps. Cheryl writes in such a way that the non-impaired gain an understanding and empathy for those who are and feel their desire and need to be treated with dignity and normalcy.
This story is so captivating and the lessons learned are so real and personal. I'd love to see it made into a movie!

I just finished this book, and it was a heartfelt and inspiring read. Jenny is a strong, determined protagonist whose blindness never defines her limits, which I found refreshing and empowering. The mix of music, journalism, and personal growth kept the story engaging, while her evolving connection with Jamie added emotional depth. I appreciated how the romance developed naturally, though the secret created a predictable twist. The writing is smooth and the pacing steady. Overall, it’s a touching story about ambition, trust, and love that leaves a lasting impression.

This book was one of those books that nothing else could be done until I finished it. Dishes? Time to break out the paper plates. Laundry? Nothing smells too bad. Work? Good thing I read it on my day off. But seriously, I loved the LI so much! And Jenny is a great MC. Plus I really really want O’Shannon to be a really band. If you want a sweet romance with swoon worthy Irish men, this is a must read!

A heartfelt and empowering story that shines with authenticity. Jenny is a beautifully crafted protagonist, determined, witty, and refreshingly real. The emotional depth, gentle romance, and subtle challenge to assumptions make this a quietly powerful read. Thoughtful, honest, and full of heart.

See Me as I Am is a beautifully written and inspiring story that offers a fresh perspective on the world through the eyes of a blind teenager. Jenny is such a strong, determined character. The book does a wonderful job showing that blindness doesn’t mean limitation—it just means doing things differently, sometimes with a little extra time and creativity. The romance is sweet and... I won't mention the twist!
