Cicely Mary Barker was the illustrator who created the famous Flower Fairies; those ethereal smiling children with butterfly wings. As a child she was influenced by the works of the illustrator Kate Greenaway, whom she assiduously copied in her formative years. Her principal influence, however, was the artwork of the Pre-Raphaelites.

I have an old, vintage copy of this little book and had been looking forward to pulling it out to share with my older daughter. She loved it.

The story is worthy of the fairytale tradition and the illustrations are incredibly charming.

A brief but sweet tale. The character Claribell not really adequately introduced. The illustrations are the true prize.
