The Spoiler: Revealing the Secrets of Survivor

Rate this book
Could someone have actually spoiled an entire season of Survivor? That was the question everyone was asking back in January, 2003, an entire month before the season premier of The Amazon. On January 9th, I started an Internet message board thread under the assumed alias of "ChillOne," and debriefed my intelligence, "would-be" confidential information that I uncovered while vacationing in the Brazilian Amazon, including contestant names, game dynamics, location details, and Tribal Council "boot order." In that report, I named Matt Von Ertfelda and Jenna Morasca as the two finalists and pointed to Jenna as the player who was better liked of the two, providing a tantalizing hint of a possible final outcome! Over the next four months, my information would be under the microscope; picked apart and analyzed piece-by-piece by thousands, while at the same time gaining national attention. In the end, ChillOne became one of the most talked about, if not the most talked about, informants in Survivor spoiling history.

First I should disclose that I foolishly bought this book on Amazon without paying attention to what the book was really about. Had I known, I would have saved the $1.00 spent on it.

Reasons I did not enjoy the book:

The author has a huge ego. There’s no telling how many times I rolled my eyes at some of his comments.

The author annoyingly and continuously refers to himself in the third person (a lot) and then switches back to the first person.

The author repeatedly referred to his information obtained as “intel” almost as much as I have annoyingly and continuously referred to him as “the author”.

In all seriousness, the story is about a person known as “The Chill One” who while on vacation in the Amazon, asked a boat driver to tell him who was voted off and made it to the end on Survivor. The boat driver did not have much information and was not correct about everything, but he did disclose who was last off the island, thus the winner.

That’s it.

The sad part is that the author made it into a undercover mission as if he was a secret agent. He also claims he’s provided surveillance related consulting to the FBI, NSA and some others entities.

Software salesman?

Since no real covert operation existed, the book primarily consisted of his life that revolved around the internet Survivor spoilers discussion boards.

If you want to read about the discussions that took place for The Chill One, then this is the book for you.

The two stars were for The Chill One because he wrote a book and chased his dreams. Good for him.

The first couple of chapters were interesting, the rest was basically just the posts from when the reveal unfolded. I also thought it was weird how he listed all these people he wanted to thank at the end of the book but didn't even list the locals who helped him get all the info in the first place...

If you are a huge fan of Survivor, you may not have ever heard of this guy. If you are into Survivor Spoiling, you may not have heard of this guy. If you were into Survivor Spoiling ten years ago you know the ChillOne is.

I had heard of the alias. He revealed some important info on Survivor Season 6 a month before it aired. There was a lot of controversy of who he was and if his info was real. So, having known about it I wanted to read about it.

It was kind of interesting, but only to those who are really into this stuff. Although the book is billed as being the story behind how he got the info, that is really only the first few chapters. Most of the book is about how he dealt with the message boards about distributing his info. Lots of talk about trolls and flamers and lurkers...

You kind of relive the season show by show and then hear about the happenings on the boards. It isn't written real well, it isn't written horribly. It is just kind of bleh as far as literary merit is concerned.

He seems to overhype his "undercover operation" in getting his information on the show. He seems to think it was a vast and delicate operation, but when you read it you realize it was fairly simple.

Truthfully it wouldn't be recommended to anyone unless you know who ChillOne is and didn't follow the thread when it was alive.
