What a book! It is an honest but affectionate look at the quiet lives of Dorothy Osbourne and William Temple, a loving couple from the 17th Century who faced an uphill struggle to achieve happiness together, and the scholar and poet Thomas Gray, famous for his poem Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. It reads easily which belies the careful thought that clearly went into it. At the end of it we are reminded both of the fragile nature of the human heart and its stubborn strength too.
