From airplane/avión/avion to zigzag/zigzag/zigzag, Marthe Jocelyn and Tom Slaughter have created a unique ABC for the very young. The book works perfectly in three languages, English, Spanish, and French (English, Español, and Français). In each case, deceptively simple paper cuts will delight the eye while young readers explore words in three languages.
The book has been carefully constructed to accommodate each language, including the letters which occur in Spanish, but not in English or French. Earlier collaborations by Tom Slaughter and Marthe Jocelyn have received raves from critics. This new addition to their library is yet another excellent introduction to modern art, to words, and this time to the fun of languages
This is a great book for multilingual children or just for those whose parents want to introduce new languages and sounds to their children. It is very simple with large, colorful pictures. I'm going to try it out in a multilingual storytime!
Learn the alphabet and a few words in English/Spanish/French with words and simple colorful die-cut illustrations. The book includes the various letters of the English language alphabet as well as several that are unique to Spanish (ie. "ch" used for "chaqueta" - jacket in Spanish and "ll" for "lluvia - rain in Spanish). Interesting little book to introduce children to the following: the alphabet, basic English/French/Spanish, as well as seeing how the three languages are very similar to each other.
Enjoyed the concept of this book more than the content. Liked the idea of learning the French and Spanish for some abc words in English. Liked how similar some were. Then we got things like wind-surfer and zig-zag which are the same in all languages!
Good idea, lovely art. Absence of articles/genders keeps it from being as useful as it could/should be. I'd hesitate to recommend, unless you plan to supply what's missing for yourself.
