This is a very interesting read. Bird has a lyrical style - most of the time. Some {unfortunately lengthy} passages read like a tourism brochure. It's unfortunate that he does not include any maps; even the photos are scanty and unoriginal. There is a wealth of historic information here, and Bird does paint an appealing picture of the province at the time. He also has a gift for cramming a multitude of engaging stories into a very small space through economical and precise writing.

Especially enjoyed the story about the circus debacle in Port Hawkesbury in the 1870's!
