Diese Biographie ist nur zufällig eine Politikerbiographie. Der Fokus Mierzejewskis liegt fast ausschließlich auf dem Wirtschaftswissenschaftler Erhard. Diese Schwerpunktsetzung ist verständlich angesichts der Bedeutung Erhards für die Ausbildung des Wirtschaftssystems der Bundesrepublik und auch auf dem Selbstverständnis des 2ten Bundeskanzlers gegründet. Leider tritt vor allem der Mensch Erhard hinter diesem Schwerpunkt bis zur Unkenntlichkeit zurück. Auch zur Entwicklung des Politikers Erhard hätte man sich mehr Einblicke gewünscht. In dieser Darstellung wird dieser Aspekt nur anhand der ausgeübten Positionen beschrieben, die immer als Möglichkeit Erhards seine wirtschaftlichen Erwägungen umzusetzen verstanden werden. Dies erscheint insbesondere in Hinblick auf Erhards Menschenbild etwas unvollständig.
Die Biographie hätte 400 zusätzliche Seiten gut vertragen können. Der Anhang gibt Auskunft über Mierzejewski umfangreiche Materialsammlung, aber dieses Material erscheint nur sehr verkürzt im Text. Selbst der Schwerpunkt der Erhardschen Vorstellung der "Sozialen Marktwirtschaft" bleibt an der Oberfläche. Trotz dieser Einschränkungen bleibt dieses Werk die definitive Biographie Erhards, eine 1000 Seiten Biographie des "Vaters des Wirtschaftswunders" ist lange überfällig.

A great overview over the German post-war economic recovery and the political scene at the time through the lense of one of its most important politicians. The author covers the time span thoroughly and efficiently; never meandering over inconsequential details. Even those who do not agree with Erhard's economic principles (as do I), will surely gain respect and sympathy for this principled and economically savvy politician (as have I).
Sadly the book is held back by the author's idolizing of Erhard which prevents a more thorough examination and explanation of Erhard's political flaws and failures, the analysis of his successes also suffer as a result. Stylistically I found it rather grating how the author hammered down on a few thesis statements of his, using often nearly verbatim phrasing. Additionally I found his use of indirect speech inconsistent at best, random at worst.

The book is a great summery of German economy 1930 to 1960. It centers Ludwig Erhard and his politics. The only personal information inclueded are necessary to understand his political views. So if you are looking for a book about his personal life this is not the right book to chose. If you are looking for a book about his economical views, this is the right one.
