Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
Rosemary Wells is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. She often uses animal characters to address real human issues. Some of her most well-known characters are Max & Ruby and Timothy from Timothy Goes To School (both were later adapted into Canadian-animated preschool television series, the former’s airing on Nickelodeon (part of the Nick Jr. block) and the latter’s as part of PBS Kids on PBS).
This book is a 'picture reader' meaning that some of the words are small pictures of whatever item you will be saying... like a pictures of a cake instead of the word cake, Max's face instead of MAX, etc. Helping young readers begin to read.
Ruby is looking forward to school starting up and show and tell. She wants to make a cake to take and she tries several times before she finally gets it right. She tells Max he's too little to go to school and he can't go. BUT he follows her and plays on the playground, and sits in a desk at school, and is active in his own show and tell and all the while the teacher enjoyed him being there.
Now with all that being said...I'm NOT a fan of Max and Ruby. I only read them due to my special needs children enjoying the television show. So I check out the library books to read to them. Just like in this book, young Max wanders around without adult supervision ALWAYS and Ruby is ALWAYS bossy toward him which he doesn't usually listen to her. And he's always getting into trouble but instead of getting in trouble those around him tell him it's okay. UGH! So if you can over look the 'real life' part of these books then you may enjoy the Max and Ruby books...I'm just not a fan but do try and rate them accordingly to the storyline and interest my sons show in it.
Fairly standard, but not overly satisfying Max and Ruby early reader, with lots of pictures to help children read. The illustrations are adorable, as always and our youngest loved that she could read it all by herself.
This was a great intro to Max and Ruby books. There are not as many words on each page, as the regular Max and Ruby, which helps very little readers enjoy.
