Her books have sold hundreds of thousands--now Joyce Rupp's first collection of poetry! Joyce Rupp has gently guided thousands towards a deeper understanding of personal and universal spiritual truths. Now, in her first collection of poetry, Rupp shares her own awakening to the spiritual realities in nature, affirming the inner journey and challenging the way we live our lives. She encourages US to trust our own fragile dreams for inner growth--just as a bird rests itself on a small twig and trusts it for support.
Joyce Rupp is well known for her work as a writer, a spiritual "midwife," and retreat and conference speaker. She has led retreats throughout North America, as well as in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Joyce has a B.A. in English, a M.R.E. in Religious Education, and a M.A. in Transpersonal Psychology. She is a member of the Servites (Servants of Mary) community and was a volunteer for Hospice for fifteen years. She currently resides in Des Moines, Iowa. This book is really beautiful, I highlighted something on nearly every page. The illustrations are gorgeous and the nature theme of the poems is a calm soothing breeze to the soul.
I've had this book for a long time and still haven't read all of it. It's the kind of book I pick up every now and then and read a few poems , mark something that is meaningful to me and then put it down. I think reading straight through would spoil it as each poem needs to be slowly read and meditated on. I'm not a big fan of poetry; I never seem to "get" what the poet is trying to say. But this book is different. The poems are short and nature related. It's up to us how to interpret what the message to each of us is.
One short poem is as follows-
If only we could be more patient, more hopeful, more trusting with the snail-part of ourselves.
The poems and artwork are beautiful. I enjoyed each and every one. Each one is a peaceful oasis, a silent retreat. The contemplative prayer words I’ve been spending time with are solitude, silence and peace. This book encompasses all three. It was a joy to read and reflect on. I even practiced lectio on the beautiful art as well.
I enjoyed reading this collection of uncomplicated poems. I use them in my classroom with middle schoolers to help them glimpse ways that we can meet with God through nature.
