Art is good, but story is meh. Typical Nineties. Bought this because it's a cult classic and because a metalband used the cover of this comic for an album of theirs in the nineties.

A short but punchy minor retcon of Purgatori's origin story. While I've been harping on the addition of an extensive cast of unnecessary characters in some of the other Chaos comics that were coming out at around this time, I felt that the characters that were introduced here were all pretty reasonable additions. They all have direct ties to Purgatori in ways that could easily be used for storytelling purposes. It's not that I'm against new characters with somewhat silly, action-figure-ish designs (these are comics, after all, it's not like that can be fully avoided), I'm just asking that characters be grounded with an actual purpose in the context of the story.

The art is good for its era. The volume has been turned up on the violence slightly in comparison to the typical Lady Death comic, which is perhaps to be expected of a vampire story. I've been in a vampire mood lately, so that might be biasing me, but I suspect that the vampiric aspects of the Chaos Comics universe are among its strongest features, and this book doesn't dissuade me from that opinion.

This book tells the origin story of Purgatori, Jade, and Kabala. It is a story of love, betrayal, and revenge.

Overall, this is a good story, but I do have a few issues. The first chapter is a promo issue. It is really confusing and hard to follow, until the reader figures out it is not part of the actual story. It is a nice addition to the trade, but should have been at the end with the covers as an extra.

Another issue is the unanswered questions. It explains what happened to Kabala, but what happened to Jade? Also, after the coffin is removed the queen and king are vampires. What happened to them?

The art is excellent with bold colors.
