Legend has it that when preparing props for the James Bond film Live and Let Die, producer Albert Broccoli commissioned Surrealist maestro Salvador Dalí to create a custom deck of tarot cards. Inspired by his wife Gala, who nurtured his interest in mysticism, Dalí eagerly got to work, and continued the project of his own accord when the contractual deal fell through. The work was published in a limited art edition in 1984 that has since long sold out, making Dalí the first renowned painter to create a completely new set of cards. Drawing on Western masterpieces from antiquity to modernity (including some of his own), Dalí seamlessly combined his knowledge of the arcane with his unmistakable wit. The result is a surreal kaleidoscope of European art history. I won't call myself an art connoisseur, but from a very young age Salvador Dali's unique art definitely made an impression. And as a long-time tarot reader, I was thrilled to learn that he had created a tarot deck and that it was in print again.
True to form, Dali defies expectations here. While a few of the cards are wholly new works of his, most of the images here are cut-and-paste Frankensteins of older works of art and Dali's own brush strokes. Whether all new or not, all of the cards have Dali's unmistakable vision.
The guidebook for this edition doesn't give any detail or explanation for Dali's approach to creating the deck, but wins out for detailed analyses for every image and clear outlines of the different works incorporated into most of them.

The edition is so beautiful, Dalí made a great work creating his own Tarot deck, I can't deny his genius and insight into the deep symbolism of the Arcana, also, the book and the cards themselves are beautiful, Taschen did a great job here
