Catie Copley #2

Catie Copley's Great Escape

Rate this book
Catie Copley is a black Labrador retriever who lives an unusual life as Canine Ambassador at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. Her job includes welcoming guests, taking them for walks, and helping Jim at his job as the hotel’s Chief Concierge. Santol, who trained as a guide dog, just like Catie, is her canine counterpart at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City, Canada.
Catie, a very lady-like dog, is surprised when, one day, a large, furry, black-and-white intruder snatches her toy lobster and runs away with it. She is taken aback, but once she gets to know the rambunctious Santol they become firm friends. When Jim drives Santol back to Canada, Catie is very excited to go too.
This is Catie’s first vacation and her first time in a strange city where they speak a different language. Santol introduces her to a famous goat, a friendly horse, a clumsy juggler, and intriguing new foods and smells. Catie finds that there is a lot of opportunity for adventure… maybe a little too much adventure.

Catie Copley - lovable black Labrador and Canine Ambassador at Boston's Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel - experiences her first vacation in this second picture-book devoted to her adventures, following upon the 2007 Catie Copley . Introduced to the rambunctious Santol - the Canine Ambassador at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac in Quebec City - Catie joins her new friend at his hotel for a few days, meeting his friends and exploring his city.

As engaging as the first installment of Catie's picture-book "biography," Catie Copley's Great Escape introduces a second wonderful hotel dog, and an entirely new setting, both sure to appeal to fans of the original. Jared T. Williams' illustrations are wonderfully expressive, demonstrating a excellent understanding of canine body language and mood. All in all, a worthy follow-up to the first book, with a portion of the proceeds from sales going to NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans in the United Sates, and the Mira Foundation in Canada.

This book is the sequel to Catie Copley, telling of a vacation the late, much-loved host animal of the Copley Plaza Hotel took to Quebec City. Catie meets Santol, a similarly-trained guide dog who also turned into a Canine Ambassador. (I see no recent references to Santol online, so I fear that he too is no longer with us. There is a nice YouTube video of him in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXbMG... )

The illustrations are charming, and especially so if you have ever personally met either of these important functionaries. There is a sense of Romance in the illustrations, especially in the scene on the sofa in front of the fireplace. The text, though, steers clear of any tricky territory.

What disappointed me about this volume is that it lacks basic storytelling elements, most of the time. The first book centered on issues of coping with disappointment, and coping with new duties, and it involved a desperate search for a missing plush animal. This sequel, however, lacks conflict or plot. We never learn why Santol is visiting Boston; he steals Catie's lobster, but only in fun; they travel to the Chateau Frontenac, where there is a very brief adventure when Catie is overwhelmed by fireworks. That could have been an actual story, but the situation is simply and immediately resolved. So, this entry was definitely charming, but also felt a bit thin.

"Catie and Santol explore Boston and Quebec from a dog's-eye view, which, come to think of it, approximates a child's-eye view. This is a small travel guide and an invitation. What fun to introduce a child to either of these historic cities. But that's not all. In this story, Catie gets into a little trouble – even good dogs do — so there's just enough suspense to keep young readers turning the pages to find out what happened next."

Catie Copley is a real live dog living in the real Copley Hotel in Boston. She took a real trip to meet Santol, a real live dog living in the real Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. This story is about their adventure!

I met Santol! What a cutie pie. Now I want to meet Catie.

PS. The story gave me tears.

PPS. I am emotional.

PPPS. I can't decide if I'm going to give this to my niece, which was the intention until I met the puppy dog. Now I might keep it for myself.

The end.
