Laura Esquivel's debut novel Como agua para chocolate took the literary World by storm with its unique yet familiar story of love and longing on the Mexican border during the perilous times of the Mexican Revolution. This author's narrative, seeped in magic and peppered with Mexico's culinary customs, was quickly taken to the silver screen where Tita and Pedro's forbidden relationship would captivate audiences not only in its native country, but around the globe - cementing Equivel's name within the ever-growing canon of Latin American women writers. Nathanial Gardner introduces the reader to both the novel and the film version of Como agua para chocolate and examines not only key themes, such as rebellion and tradition, but also its style and main characters. This narrative's acclaimed use of food and other gastronomic elements are taken into consideration as well as the significance of magic realism to this text. As this novel/film combination follow each other in an unusually close manner, the first part analyses many of the components the two share while the second part of this study emphasizes the cinematic mechanisms that are unique to this particular presentation of Esquivel's most widely-studied creation to date.

Mi abuela tenía una teoría muy interesante, decía que si bien todos nacemos con una caja de cerillos en nuestro interior, no los podemos encender solos, necesitamos, como en el experimento, oxígeno y la ayuda de una vela. Sólo que en este caso el oxígeno tiene que provenir, por ejemplo, del aliento de la persona amada; la vela puede ser cualquier tipo de alimento, música, caricia, palabra o sonido que haga disparar el detonador y así encender uno de los cerillos. Por un momento nos sentiremos deslumbrados por una intensa emoción. Se producirá en nuestro interior un agradable calor que irá desapareciendo poco a poco conforme pase el tiempo, hasta que venga una nueva explosión a reavivarlo. Cada persona tiene que descubrir cuáles son sus detonadores para poder vivir, pues la combustión que se produce al encenderse uno de ellos es lo que nutre de energía al alma. En otras palabras, esta combustión es su alimento. Si uno no descubre a tiempo cuáles son sus propios detonadores, la caja de cerillos se humedece y ya nunca podremos encender un solo fósforo.

My good Mexican friend let me borrow this book. Even though I did not know half of the ingredients used in the recipes, I was always intrigued by what would happen with the next recipe. The descriptions of the tastes and the feelings of the characters were depicted so well that I could almost taste and feel what they were. I read it in Spanish.

Se desarrolla en época de la revolución mexicana, con todas sus costumbres, comida y dramas. Un amor imposible, rivalidad entre hermanas, secretos...

Se que Pedro era el amor imposible, pero John era mejor para Tita, Pedro la consumía mientras John le sumaba, pero claramente da mas historia el amor que no puede ser.
Aunque finalmente me alegró que su amor conociera la plenitud aun cuando fue en la muerte.

Como Agua Para Chocolate is a Spanish book about a girls love story, it also includes recipes. This book is about a girl named Tita who spends her whole life wishing to marry the love of her life Pedro. The problem is that she cannot marry her lover because she needs to follow the tradition of the youngest daughter. The youngest daughter has to take care of the mother until she passes away. Pedro ends up marrying her older sister, so Tita expresses her sadness and feelings with her cooking (this is where the recipes come in). In this book each month is a chapter which expresses a recipe and through the chapter they outline the preparation of the dish and how it ties to the protagonist’s life. This book is made for a mature audience since it is about love and sadness. This is a great book for readers because there is a movie that readers can watch.

A éste libro le guardo un gran aprecio, es el que me desvirginó del realismo mágico después de todo, pero probablemente lo hubiese puntuado más alto si no lo hubiese leído tan chica.

Además, creo que está de más hacerle una “reseña”, propiamente dicha. Hay demasiados resúmenes del libro por todos lados y es uno de los materiales escolares predilectos en toda Latinoamérica, así que no hay que convencer a nadie para que lea éste libro… porque te obligan.

Excellent classic book, I enjoyed the book and fantasy Laura Eaquivel wrote in the book. Ir shows a Mexican tradition through the cooking heritage between generations using delicious species. Un clásico literario con fantasía excelente, me encanto el libro y la película, muestran la cultura Mexicana a través de la cocina heredada por generaciones con los ingredientes de especies y semillas.
