Back in college I used to work in the windowless, shadowy sub-basement of the library, reshelving the returned books, the foreign fiction collection among them. Of course, I got distracted regularly, particularly by a large shelf of french comics, nothing I'd heard of besides a few Tintin and Asterix. At the time, I was fresh out of highschool French class and could read pretty fluidly. So I'd frequently poke through the collection of unfamiliar comic books, occasionally checking one out to practice. This was certainly the best of those, a strange beautiful mythology of world-trees and flying machines and snow-serpents that I've never encountered since. Strangely, I've seen art books of illustrator Claire Wendling's work in English, but her epic has never been translated, and now languishes on Goodreads in only a German edition.
