Brian P. Cleary is a former adult literacy coach and he put together a great series of books for young readers. The Sounds Like Reading series uses different devices to help children learn to read. There are eight books in the series and the rhyme, repetition and illustrations help inroduce young readers to short vowel sounds and consonant blends. I am happy that I have access to his books at my local library and I highly recommend this series to every parent who is helping their little ones with literacy. Also recommended for teachers of pre-k and early childhood.

We really enjoy Brian P. Cleary's books - the bright, bold colors; the simple, rhyming, and whimsical narrative; the easy phonics/math/grammar lesson in a fun package... This book was entertaining and I love that our girls can read it to me!

This is a good book for a beginning reader because it uses a lot of rhyming words and allows a child to see the ways letters make sounds that are repeated in different words. However, the book is not an easy book for a beginning reader to actually read. A lot of the rhyming words are a little too difficult for a child who is just learning how to sound out words.
