When the bones of the missing Harry Summers are found after twenty years, the police suspect murder, and Gun Pedersen's father is the prime suspect. By the author of Comeback. Original.
As I have come to expect from the Leif and Lin Enger, there are some refreshing sentences and descriptions in this book. Compared to the first two books in this series, this fourth Gun Pedersen book, like the third, feels more settled and confident.
Perhaps, less impressive: The men and women in this series so often come across as cardboard cutouts of stereotypical depictions of masculine and feminine types, like the macho man asshole and the stand-by your man spouse. Yes, they sometimes have some elements that don't fit the mold, but overall, readers are reminded that this is fiction in the process of being constructed, with the typical tropes you can expect from mysteries.
What keeps me reading this series, is the joy I experience in seeing how writers develop over time, what they do with characters, story structures, pacing, etc.
Yet another interesting Pedersen crime story with baseball background
Making my way through this well-written series, I enjoyed this one too. Another combination of intriguing murder-solving by main character Gun P, family relationship struggles, romance--and baseball. The story moves along through short chapters with plenty of twists and surprises. Adults who enjoy a Detroit Tiger connection will enjoy this series and this title.
This book is number 4 in a series. The collaboration of the authors to create and develop the character of Gun Pederson is enjoying to read. Most of the books are located in Northern Minnesota and his backstory as a professional baseball player adds interesting characters , locales and story lines to each book. A good 4 star series.
I have loved Leif Enger's earlier works and was enthralled. This one was just okay - seemed like it took a long time to get to the point. I do enjoy character driven writing but this one needed a little more to make me turn the pages.
Before they get married, Gun and Carol visit Gun's parents in Michigan. They've made the trip to honor a hometown friend whose remains were found in the dismantling of a former school building. Old grudges, old hurts, blackmail, family loyalty and a bit of baseball.
Wanted to like this more especially because of the baseball references and Minnesota roots. But overall two much violence and bar bravado for my taste ( I.e., someone looks at you wrong so you beat them up)
