I first came across the Arch Books at a thrift store. They looked good so I grabbed them. When I told a friend, she explained how much she loved them and that her kids went through them all the time. So I kept my eye out and I’ve grown my collection of titles. I love them too!

The vintage are best. They’re a little wordier but so much more impactful. So I would recommend seeking those.

And something I found out only this year while perusing eBay is that there are vinyl records that go along with the books! Your kids can listen while looking at the pictures. How fun is that!

Ages: 4 - 10

Content Considerations: nothing to note.

**Like my reviews? Then you should follow me! Because I have hundreds more just like this one. With each review, I provide Content Considerations, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

If you’re considering a book or looking for a new title to read, check out my highly categorized shelves, read my reviews and Friend or Follow me to spiff up your feed with clean, wholesome, living books.

I have an Instagram account that’s pretty bookishly unique too!

My women's Bible study group is doing Priscilla Shirer's study, "Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted." We came across her question to compare and contrast Jesus' parable of the lost sheep with the Old Testament story of Jonah. I thought that my kids, 3rd grade and 6th grade, could do that question, and we used the Arch books: this one, "The Man Caught by a Fish" and "Jon and the Little Lost Lamb," my favorite Arch book, as it talks about grace and forgiveness.

These books are fun for the kids because of the rhymes involved.

I also like that in this one, the book includes the lesser-known parts of the story where Jonah pouts about the city of Ninevah not being destroyed but mourns that his shade plant died. I like the way the Arch book wrapped up the story too,

"What kind of man are you?
You feel so sorry for a plant -
why not this city, too?

"Just think how happy they must be
Why do you have that frown?
The angels cheer when ONE is saved,
through you I saved a TOWN!"

I thought it was fun to compare and contrast the two stories with the kids. Both Jonah and the sheep wandered off and both were rescued with grace. The sheep got himself into trouble, but God sent trouble after Jonah. The kids had other similarities and differences, too. I'd never looked at the story of Jonah through the lens of the parable of the lost sheep before. It was a good conversation.
