An enjoyable book with a well researched background, I learned a lot about the suffragette movement, and was gripped by the story, the heroine, Nell Bray, a committed suffragette becomes embroiled in the machinations of the movement and in the Lloyd George government.

A daring and dangerous lady, Nell is a well rounded and exciting character, who is able to remain cool in the face of challenging situations. Although only a short book, there is so much happening, it holds the reader's interest throughout. It is impossible to imagine who is the spy in the women's movement, and apparently friendly characters are discovered to be villains. Her interaction with other suffragettes, with the police and with her lodger are all realistically portrayed and the characters have depth.

I enjoyed reading this and can recommend it to readers of adventure and detective fiction set in a particular period of history, which this is.

Political intrigue, business malpractice, blackmail and murder plus a rather bizarre amateur musical production in Edwardian London and its environs lead Suffragette sleuth Nell Bray into a mystery that is fired by then Chancellor of the Exchequer Lloyd George. Nell hopes that her efforts will earn a reprieve for Emmeline Pankhurst, who is on the periphery of the story but she is hampered by a spy. Who is it? Nell works hard to find out, eventually does so but does not get the rich rewards or recognition that she at one time thought. There are other Nell Bray mysteries and on the basis of this one, they must be worth a read.

This series definitely gets better as it goes along (which isn't to say the older books are bad in any way) as this is one of the later books in the series and I thought it was pretty damned good.
