John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) was without question the most influential economist of the twentieth century. His most important work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, was published in 1936, and it was widely perceived as offering plausible explanations and solutions for the Great Depression. Keynes suggested that capitalism is vulnerable to instability caused by insufficient consumer demand. He emphasized the reluctance of workers to accept reductions in nominal wages, preventing free market adjustments to unemployment. Based on these and other perceived defects in the capitalist system, Keynes suggested government intervention in the economy, and modern politicians have accepted and applied Keynesian ideas with great enthusiasm.
As I am not a Keynesian, I found this audio book well presented and produced. I learnt alot about The Right Honourable The Lord Keynes the person and how he developed his economic theory best present ed in his 1932 book the General Economic Theory. I was unaware how important he was in 20th Century British economics having gone from just an economic writer, to editor of the premier British economic journal and then his positions as 1 Financial Representative to the Versailles Peace Conference (1919) as the chief representative for the British Treasury. 2 Adviser to the Chancellor of the Exchequer: During World War I and II,a pivotal economic adviser to the Treasury. 3 and finally as Leader of the British Delegation at the Bretton Woods Conference (1944) where he was the British economic representative in the creation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Nor of his many debates with Frederich Hayek which obviously was to his benefit. Overall, it was well presented and very informative.
These programs are great. The different voices used to depict the characters are realistic and not forced. They're short and easy to read in a day.
Keynes was a revolutionary and radical thinker whose ideas still influence government and economics. His ideas supporting government intervention to preserve capitalism are paradoxical and not received well by many until an economic crisis occurs, at which point governments typically intervene, bail out companies and banks, and issue stimulus packages rather than relying on laissez-faire, free-market philosophy. This is pure Keynesianism.
This book is filled with interesting facts about Keynes's personal life and his revolutionary ideas. This is a must-read if you're interested in economics, finance, or history.
Imagine that he never met Donald J. Trump and the concept that men will spend when they feel good they feel good when they think the economy is secure and doing well.
With that John would also be shocked that those who economists he desires to run everything and not fall to the political or present pressures, those that do not use emotions to control the money supply and economy are YES actually swayed by political pressure also recently proved by President Trump as he demanded lower interest rates for the USA.
A brilliant and eccentric mind is portrayed in this quick read on Keynes. I found the influence on to free market thinkers as well as tuners opposed to it wry interesting
