Hyvä katsaus Marxin keskeisistä ajatuksista. Teosta ei voi kuitenkaan suositella lukijalle, jolla ei ole taustalla jo jonkinasteista tietämystä poliittisesta teoriasta ja historiasta sillä Seed ei juuri taustoita termejä tai historiallisia tapahtumia. Kyseessä ei siis ole ihan niin perusteos kuin kansitekstit kenties antaisivat ymmärtää.

Todella sujuva ja tiivis yleisesitys Karl Marxin laajasta ajattelusta! Toisaalta kirjoittajan sympatiat olivat selvät, joten oletettavasti esitys oli jossain määrin hyväntahtoinen. Esimerkiksi Marxin determinismistä puhuttaessa Seed liioittelee tuntuvasti väittäessään, että "Marxin koko historiankäsitys oli vastakkaista teleologisille kertomuksille historiallisesta välttämättömyydestä" (s.105). Pääasiassa Seed malttaa kuitenkin antaa mestarin itsensä puhua.

Olen aina kuvitellut väkivaltaisen ja totalitaristisen vasemmistolaisuuden olevan myöhempien marxilaisten turmelevaa tulkintaa, jotain alkuperäiselle Marxille vierasta - mutta se on ollut täysin virheellinen käsitys. Marxilta löytyy hyytäviä lausuntoja, joissa hän halveksuu kansanvaltaa, yksilön arvoa ja moraalia (mm. s. 213-5, 223-4, 226-8, 247). Hirmuvalta ja -teot oikeutetaan juuri em. determinismillä. Tässä lienee Marxin vaikeus monille: osuva kapitalismikritiikki yhdistyy hirviömäiseen julmuuteen.

Toveruuden merkeissä kiitän kommunismin isää hänen ajatustensa rikkaudesta, niiden voimasta ja niiden absoluuttisesti tinkimättömästä tärkeydestä vielä tänäkin päivänä. Toivottavasti joku päivä aurinko nousee ja lopettaa ikuisen yön.

This was a useful survey to help me get a handle on Marx. A balanced amount of historical context and biography interspersed with the content of each of Marx's works. The book finishes up with some contemporary Marxist radicals writing about third world issues - stomach wrenching!
