Though my daughter is well past “babyhood,” I have been going through some of the books I enjoyed when she was at this stage.

I think Babyhood by Penelope Leach is an extremely useful resource for those who are interested in a more detailed discussion of baby development than is provided in the What to Expect series.

Leach’s book is divided into five sections; she begins with a detailed discussion of
feeding and other physical fundamentals of the newborn; then she discusses the dramatic changes from six weeks to a year, covering psychological, social, mental and physical development; lastly, she turns to some of the challenges of the toddler, such as toilet training.

What I liked best about this book is that Leach refrains from preaching. Rather than give advice, she gives her readers access to research material from a variety of studies. This research helps readers understand babies better and make more informed decisions as parents.

Some readers may find Leach’s well-documented approach slow reading, but her insights into child development are worth the extra time.

A well thought out and well researched book.

This one is great for any parent who wants to know, "why is my baby doing this?" Penelope Leach has a great insight on what is going on and why our babies do what they do. It really made me think, "oh, that makes sence." It was obviously written in the 70s and you can tell by some of the things she writes about, but, the information about babies is timeless. A must read for parents of babies, I highly recommend.

A very technical navigational guide through the first months of kid care. And by technical I mean graphic, freaky and amazing. Highly informative for all who know very little on the subject.

One of the least hysterical, most reasonable baby books. I also like that she explains current research and puts it in context.
