Henry Bardot is a real estate mogul with a very healthy bank account, and a perfectly ordered life. He’s not interested in relationships. In his mind, they’re a waste of time and energy. As is anything fun. He simply doesn’t have time for such unnecessary things like smiling or laughing. He has work to do. Then she literally crashes into him, kissing him without even a “How do you do?” disrupting his precisely scheduled life. Lala, the pink bulldozer.
Micaela “Lala” Hart is a free spirit with a struggling business and a great love for the color pink. Pink hair, pink clothes, pink Skoolie. It’s a cheerful color that makes her happy. That’s what her life is about. Happiness and fun. Leaving behind the judgmental stares of her small Kentuky hometown, Lala is determined to find her place in the world and have fun while she’s at it. Then she meets Henry Bardot, the anti-pink grumpapotamous, who may very well be the key to expanding her little Boba business into something more.
But can she stop herself from falling for his grumpy charm and mind-blowing… conversational skills?
Content warning this book contains swearing, witty banter, lots of pink, ridiculous jokes, swoon, sassy women, tentacle talk, sex toys, strong sexual content
Rebecca Rennick, known to her friends as Becca was born in California but has since converted into a Floridian. Along with her husband, and dog. With love for both horror films and the Hallmark Channel, she can be a little dark and creepy while wearing all pastel pink. Growing up in the theater led to her studying fashion in San Francisco where she received a BFA in fashion design. She has many obsessions such as tattoos on herself and others. As well as an unhealthy desire to see the entire world. Her only other true passion is eating. She loves to try everything at least once. You only have one life and you might as well try it all. Except meth, don't try meth.
Their first interact was kind of ick. He looked unhappy so she went up and kissed him. Without his consent. Or even a hello. So...she sexually assaulted him in the middle of the street and walked away because she thought locking lips would completely change his outlook on life.
It was...narcissistic and kind of gross which I never really got over the longer I read. I'm not going to rate it because I think that this series really does have potential I just couldn't really get over the first chapter.
- grumpy x sunshine - opposites attract - best friend’s brother
LaLa and Henry meet when she assaults him the street and kisses him in the hopes to ‘turn his frown upside down’. It was a little icky and not really what I would call a merry cute.
Things do get a bit better as the book progresses though, thankfully. LaLa grew on me a bit with her sass, general funniness, and all around sunshine-y disposition. It was Henry that I struggled to like.
To put it plainly, he is kind of an asshole and blames it on his parents not loving him as a child—which, fair, that sucks, but doesn’t mean love and dating are a means to trap you into a miserable life. Plus Fawn and Samson, his siblings, seemed to turn out fine 🤷🏻♀️
He eventually removes the stick from his ass and is sort of sweet, but there’s a horrible third act ‘break up’ (they were just FWB 🙄) and he went back on my shit list. I did enjoy the banter between LaLa and Henry though, and the spice was pretty decent, but overall this just wasn’t my jam.
This book was so cute!!! And while it wasn’t especially comedic, this romcom did make me laugh out loud a few times. It was a really fun read! Lala, short for Micaela, travels the country in her pink skoolie with her pink ferret Frank, selling homemade boba teas and gracing America with her peppy presence. She has pink hair, pink clothes, and pretty much the personality of bubblegum pink, and I couldn’t love her more. Know who doesn’t? The local Grump, Henry, who makes acquaintance with Lala’s lips before the rest of her. It’s a long story…
Anywho, Henry, who has and wants nothing else to live for than his job, is perfectly happy being miserable, thank you very much. He has no time for fun, happiness, and certainly no time for Strawberry Shortcake and her bubblicious lifestyle. Only, turns out, maybe he does. He knows that love and marriage are a waste of time, and Lala has much more of the world to explore.
But…maybe…just maybe, there is something to explore between the two of them. And I totally ate it with a spoon (boba straw?) and asked for more. Lala is my spirit animal and I loved her. I wanted to slap Henry as much as I wanted to climb him like a tree, so he wasn’t all bad. In the end, this was cute and funny and a great escape!
This was super cute and I really did love the characters…it’s a perfectly sweet, fluffy, spicy romcom with a delightfully quirky heroine and that delicious grumpy/sunshine dynamic we all love.
However - Rebecca needs a better proofreader/editor sooooo badly. It’s easy to overlook all the typos in exchange for the vibes, but her story really deserves better!!
Will definitely check out the next one in this series!
*Update: I finally heard back from the author, but remain firm with my statements and will not be changing anything I’ve written.*
I will not be giving this book a star rating based on a lack of response from an outreach in regard to offensive context. I am not accusing the author of bigotry, but as I received no reply to my concern after 48 hours, I felt called to be 100% transparent with my review.
4/5 🌶️
Overall, I want to be able to say that I loved this book. Lala was relatable. I love her quirky personality and aesthetic. The writing style is fun and casual, super easy to read. Lots of quirky banter! Amazing character building.

While the following may seem minor to some, they are socially problematic when ignored, I will also state that I sought opinions from fellow readers, an author, and my trans husband prior to making these statements.
On to the negative issues: 1. Henry refusing to use Layla’s preferred name. In chapter 16, Samson brings it up to Henry. He states “you don’t even use her preferred name,” Henry says “no I don’t, it’s called respect.” Which is in itself disrespectful. Using the term “preferred name” and the disrespect Henry shows towards using her nickname feels neglectful at best as the term feels tied to the trans community. Saying “you don’t respect/use her nickname” would have avoided this. Not to mention Henry than turns around and provides his own nickname for her which cancels out the excuse of respect he’s used towards her name. 2. Later, when Lala uses the term for a second time in relation to her coworkers going by their derby names, it felt redundant in this same regard. The author could have said “yeah, they go by their derby names” rather than “yes those are their preferred names.” 3. This was a very, very modern contemporary romance. In the very last chapter the MCs are at a baby shower. There is text that states “everyone, male and female, are there.” Why does “male and female” need to be blatantly pointed out in a contemporary romance at all? Specifically one of such a modern nature.
This is a super spice grumpy/sunshine, opposites attract romantic comedy and I’m OBSESSED!!! I loved this book so much and the characters (even the side characters) were so phenomenal! The mmc is completely serious and set in his ways, as in business business business. In walks our pink haired sweet goddess! If you like mf, romcom, and spice then you have to read this book immediately!!!
This was a very one dimensional and kind of problematic book. Aside from the two rape jokes at the beginning my issue is with both of the main characters, while it’s supposed to be a fun grumpy/ sunshine romance it’s really just about Lala putting her needs aside for Henry and the two of them never having an adult conversation. Henry never steps up and shows her he cares. The entire book is just him realizing maybe he wants her around. And I’m sorry but he didn’t even come up with his big grand gesture to win her back on his own. He needed his sister to tell him to buy Lala a bottle of perfume and the boba trailer she’s been talking about endlessly? The bar is set so low for men in the book you can’t even stand to look at it. It has the premise to be a really cute book but unfortunately did not pay off.

This is a super cute Grumpy x Sunshine rom-com. It made me laugh and giggle so many times and was exactly what I needed to get me out of my reading slump.
1⭐️ If you are the author of this book or you’re not looking for spoilers please keep scrolling.
This book was absolutely boring. I found myself skimming on MULTIPLE occasions. Once I finished the book it then put me in a book slump. This book was tropiest book I ever read. Yes I know that’s not a real word I made it up for this book. This book is so on the nose with its tropes. Like the MC is SUPER grumpy, never smiles, HATES PINK (because ofc he does 😒). The fmc is SUPER sunshine, LOVES the color pink as in wears pink clothes, has pink hair, has pink bows tattooed on the back of her thighs. Her trailer and EVERYTHING in it is pink. She even has a ferret to which she dyed his fur pink because in her words why not?
Let me rewind a bit. The book starts off with assault. 😒 Yes you read that correctly assault. The book starts off with Lala (fmc) seeing Henry (mc) across the street. She thinks he looks grumpy and could use something that would brighten up his day. Her friend then dares her to go over there and give him a hug since she’s known for a being a ray of sunshine for people. Lala goes over there but does she give this absolute stranger a hug nooooooooooo. She determines that a hug wouldn’t nearly be enough to boost his day. She decides to kiss him. 🚩🚩🚩🚩 PSA people you can’t just walk up to people and kiss them even if you are a girl. Not only does she kiss him but she like rubs on his chest (in her inner monologue she’s like feeling him up talking about hard his abs are 😒) But let’s be so for real if a guy did this we’d be in a uproar but because it’s a girl she’s cute and quirky??? ABSOLUTELY NOT. This happens literally within the first 2 chapters of the book. Which to me is a weird way you start off your book. I was never quite able to get past this when reading the rest of the book.
This books I supposed to be enemies to lovers I guess. But to me there’s not an ounce of romance in this book. This book felt like Henry (mc) constantly trying to change Lala (fmc) to fit whatever idea of a woman he has in his mind. He refuses to call her by her preferred name Lala. When she’s made it absolutely clear she doesn’t like going by Micaela. He said he respects her too much to call her Lala because it’s childish or something. 🙄 He complains about her attire and basically whole pink demeanor. He makes it very clear that he doesn’t do full on relationships and yet she thought she could change him. (She literally says something like that while crying in the book) Girl pleaseeeeee 🤦🏽♀️. I don’t even know why she wants a relationship with him. Has to be the sex cause he doesn’t seem to like her like that fr especially on that level.
I could go on and on but honestly majority of it was boring. The smut was okay until you get to the one scene later in the book. 🤢 I was cringing so hard iykyk. I still plan to give this author another shot cause I feel like the book had potential and I was hyped for it but it disappointed me. Last thing I want to leave you with she calls him things like sir grumps a lot or grumpopotamus 🥴 you know cause she quirky.
I originally thought I was going to give this 3 stars but after the half way point, it dropped to 2 and couldn’t make a recovery.
The author says up front that this is an easy read/palette cleanser…and it is that. But that’s about it. I have the special edition, so it’s got pink text, full color illustration, and a signature…all very cute and all reasons I forced myself to finish, but it was unfortunately forced.
I felt like I was reading one of my student’s creative writing pieces. A bit juvenile, WAY too much tell instead of show, and a lot of flat characters. Lala’s whole personality is pink. Henry’s whole personality is grey. Grumpy/Sunshine is SO literal and on the nose here, it reads like a caricature. Every single article of clothing, accessory, and object in Lala’s universe has to be described as pink to the point where it’s nauseating, even for a pink lover like me. Every single page about Henry has to emphasize that he doesn’t have “time for unnecessary things like smiling.” I had to suspend my disbelief too much.
There’s also like a handful of rape-y jokes RIGHT off the bat. It just starts off so strangely. Lala sees Henry, a stranger, and just kisses him.
The romance scenes are slightly better than….all the other writing, but it’s odd in tandem with the juvenile writing (picture an inexperienced 14 year old writing a story in first person present tense and describing every detail of an outfit, muddling through dialogue, and then…writing a crazy sex scene? It’s jarring). Eventually though, they started sounding a bit strange. Not the best sex scenes I’ve read. Just better than the rest of the book. Once Lala called Henry “Zaddy” about 6 times in 2 pages, I checked out entirely.
While I have other complaints, the last one I’ll focus on is typos/mistakes. This is an indie book and typos are to be expected, but some were repeated often enough that it seemed as though the author didn’t realize she was making a mistake. Necessary punctuation missing, or unnecessary punctuation thrown in too often. It was distracting. The strangest mistake was when Lala was deciding how to wear her hair to a gala. One idea was to wear her hair up to “show off her negligée.” Negligée was very clearly not the right word - she didn’t wear lingerie to a gala. It was immediately obvious from context that the author meant décolletage. They both have an é…close enough? But there were just too many incorrect or poorly written sentences, it was hard to take the book seriously.
I wanted to love it. It was so pink and cute and nicely produced. The premise seemed great and I was looking forward to a nice “palette cleanser.” Unfortunately, this just came off as inexperienced writing, like a 7th grader writing their first romance, with clunky, superficial characterization - it just happened to also have a few sex scenes. The book itself is a cute novelty and the idea is cute, but the execution was trite and the writing was just…severely unimpressive. I’m unfortunately very disappointed; I wanted to love this pretty book so much.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review, and I didn't hesitate to jump in because of how much I enjoyed this author's other novel, Soul Collector.
As much as I hate to say it, this book was probably only a 2.25-2.5 star read for me. Come the 60% mark I ended up skimming because I just wasn't that into it. Some parts were cute, some parts were good, but overall I think that maybe it just wasn't for me, and that's okay, though shocking because I loved the overall aesthetic and I love pink. But for me it wasn't great. It took me way longer to read this book because I just didn't feel pulled into the story and I didn't resonate with any of the characters. Like others have said, it read like a long winded hyper friend that just doesn't stop talking, which for me didn't jive, and it wasn't as spicy as I expected.
--The main character is 27, but her actions and dialogue came across more to me like a teenager, not someone only 4 years younger than me. Her actions and personality were very juvenile. And I'm sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but I think "Lala" just came across as a very immature nickname for me and just ruined the character for me. I was happy Henry refused to call her that. I get she loves pink, so do I, but that was the characters ENTIRE personality. her hair is pink, all her clothes are pink, her bus is pink, her jeep is pink, her interior decorations are pink, she even dyes her pet ferret pink. chill, girl
That being said, I do love a good Grumpy-sunshine, and Henry was grumpy enough to mostly counteract Micaela's overly sunshine. Overall I think maybe this book just wasn't for me
Oh my Gosh!! 😍💗 My face hurts from how much I was smiling and gushing reading this book!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Stars
“And what makes you think you’ll be the one to make me smile, Shortcake?"
I am officially obsessed with the Gummy Bear Orgy Series now, and I can not wait for the next one! If you want an adorable Grumpy/Sunshine dynamic with 🌶🌶🌶 SPICE, then this is the book for you! I fell in love with all of the characters in this book, especially Lala. Her outlook on life has me contemplating dying my hair pink again! Henry took me a second, Mr. Hard Business, but I fell in love with him in the end.
The Dedicatiom at the front of the book says, "For everyone who’s burnt out from heart wrenching fantasies & dark emotionally charged novels. Take a breather." And she was so right! THIS was exactly what I needed! OH, I can't wait for BOOK 2!
I wavered between 3 and 4 for my rating. So I'm going to put 4 and then explain why I almost put it as a 3.
I actually really loved 99% of this book. I love a good grumpy/sunshine and our MMC is a total grump. I am a sucker for sickly cute so I really enjoyed Lala's nicknames of Grumpasauras etc. Lala was totally relatable to me and hello I love all things pink so this was a total win for me.
The only thing that made me want to rate down was the first chapter. Lala kisses him in the middle of the street without giving him any choice or warning. It made me feel kind of ick. Consent is sexy. I read a lot of dark romance with dub-con so I'm honestly not sure why this icked me out as much as it did. Maybe I was thrown because it was a cutesy romance so I wasn't expecting it.
But honestly I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the book so I left my rating as a 4.
Super solid, This reminded me a lot of a rom-com movie! I liked that our man guy was a true grump who couldn’t helped but be charmed by our pink sunshine girl. I’m kinda obsessed with Lala and the fact that she had a ferret and lived in a pink bus. Good spice in here also, it went on a bit too long but overall a fun time!
Okay this book is super cute. I will never not love a grumpy/sunshine trope. I was worried in the beginning because the MMC felt really flat to me because it really doesn’t seem possible for a human to not have interests and feel nothing. Felt very Patrick Bateman at first. But I’m happy I continued on with it because it ended beautifully.
3.75 This book was super cute and such a quick read. This is the perfect book for you if you are looking for a palate cleanser. My only complaint with this book is that it got a little repetitive as it went on, but it did not take anything away from the characters and their story. I am really looking forward to starting the halloween book next!
Thank you Rebecca Rennick for the free copy of Pinky Promise in exchange for my honest review. This tale follows Lala (short for Micaela), the nomadic, pink-loving, boba tea seller, and Henry, the monochromatic grump with no time for joy or spontaneity. These two are genuine opposites, a true grumpy x sunshine– not a misunderstood quiet introvert, but a man who frowns at the la croix idea of joy. Pinky Promise is a dual POV romance, with really dynamic characters. I was worried that a character who’s advertised personality is how much she loves pink would be two-dimensional and flat. However, Lala proves to be dynamic and exciting. Her zest for life and finding joy in everything is contagious. Her boba tea shop has potential, but isn’t making the sales it needs to stay afloat. Henry has a really interesting starting point in this story– establishing his worldview and demeanor from the get go. He;s a realtor with a vision for businesses and success. He had turned a rundown part of Pittsburg into a flourishing and charming hot spot. Lala and Henry first encounter when Lala tries to brighten his day, or, in her words, turn that frown upside down. How does she strive to brighten the grump? With a spontaneous kiss, with eye contact, of course. After a reencounter, Lala’s best friend and Henry’s sister, Fawn, suggests that Henry let Lala set up her stand at a corporate event at his office. He is immediately turned off by the idea, but Fawn convinces him to at least try her shop before he refuses. Reluctant as he is, Lala and Henry pinky promise to consider the arrangement. The consequent side deal is Lala agreeing to take Henry on outings to break free of his shell, much to Fawn’s delight. What follows is a series of delightful *not dates* “I am who I am, and others will just have to accept that” What I love about these characters is how unapologetically themselves they are, even when faced with each others’ contrasting views. Eventually, we see this unlikely duo working with each other to build each other up. It starts small and subtle, but works its way to little moments with big impacts. Henry’s nicknames for Lala are incredible. Honestly, I love them so much. The chapter titles are lines that occur later in the chapter. I generally find them oddly charming, but the wow effect these lines would have without them was diminished– kind of like the punchline of a joke being explained. Overall, I really really loved this story. Henry and Lala have an enchanting plot with all of the sweet, funny, and spicy moments you’re looking for in a romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
This was super over the top in the absolute best of ways. Really just a breath of fresh air romcom. He's the ultimate grump, she quite literally calls him a grumpapotamous, and she is happy go lucky and loves all aspects of life. They're perfect for each other 🥰

Thoughts: As many people have already highlighted the dedication, I won't repeat, but yes this book was a complete shift from the monster romance I've been devouring lately. It took me longer than other books to finish because this book was sooooo sweet while also being full of "miscommunication" which wasn't really miscommunication but a refusal on both of the MCs parts to communicate about the state of their relationship. I really loved the changes of Henry over the book, as he welcomed more of Lala into his life, but I also really loved how she found a home with his grumpy butt. And Henry could dirty talk me all day, every day and I would never complain. Overall I did really enjoy this book, and hope I'm able to eventually get my hands on a pink font physical copy, but this didn't reach five star rating because miscommunication or choosing not to is NOT my trope, it's almost my ick.
My Favorite Quotes:
❤️ Love Note: I read smut almost exclusively, so prepare yourself for my spicy shelves 😋 I am annoyed by closed door/fade-to-black spice, so if I read the book and recommend it, count on there being spice. Words are their own source of magic, be kind.
Everything about this book was absolutely adorable.
You have a grumpy MMC and sunshine FMC. Absolutely opposite people but one random kiss throws them together! Lala was such a gorgeous breathe of air and coupled with Henry it made for a fun romcom with the perfect amount of spice.
I also love the pink font and gummy bear orgy idea💕
