This is from a 1987 series called Where Animals Live. The photos are stock images or stills from Oxford Scientific Films. For a book from 1987, I was surprised to see the term "free-range."
This is a dull look at chickens in modern times on various farms. There are brief mentions of Wild Jungle Fowl, cockfighting, and chickens as pets. Only three breeds are shown.
There are disturbing photos of factory farms and a dead chicken embryo still partly in the egg. The author tries to defend factory farming almost with a sigh, stating that at least the chickens are warm.
The fox is unfairly blamed as being one of the main killers of chickens. The main killer of chickens are, by far people. Disease would be next.
Speaking of chicken killers, this book lists the ages chickens are when sent to slaughter. It differs if they were to lay eggs first, or were specifically bred for meat. No chickens live beyond 18 months, unless they removed from the food chain.
The photos aren't very good. Some are dark or have their subjects partially obscured.
