Fabulous photos of original and restored bungalow kitchens that leave you feeling lust in your heart...thoroughly researched and full of great advice for both "obsessive restoration" and "compromise solutions". This is a must-have book if you have an early 20th century home and want to restore the original kitchen or replace a benighted update with something more appropriate to the era of the house. This is not just a book of pretty photos, although there are many of those; you will learn a great deal by reading it. It's also a great source of encouragement for sticking to your guns with contractors or family members who will try to talk you out of your "impractical" kitchen dreams.
There is a new edition available now so you aren't just limited to seeking out copies from used book dealers.

I read every word. I studied every picture. I laughed out loud at her little jokes and puns. What I loved the best (aside from the photos) was that she divides everything into two categories. The first is for die-hard "I want everything exactly as it was for my bungalow" and the second is for everyone else who maybe can't afford the $$$ or the time to get it exact and will settle for a "look." Jane Powell is the best!

Trying to remodel kitchen and bath - hope to strike a balance between function and form with sensitivity to the 1946 "part-spanish-revival, part I-have-no-idea" stylings of our house. This book is helping!

I used both Bungalow Kitchens and Bungalow Bathrooms for my restoration projects. Her advice was invaluable. Her "how-to" was practical. She presents options - for the obsessive restorationist, and compromise solutions. I mostly compromised. I met her at a booksigning here in Berkeley, where she bought an old house, lived in it while she restored it, sold it, and bought another. I was saddened by her early death.

We've both had fun flipping through this book and talking about what we like. Lots of color photos, though many are too antique-y for our tastes.. Hope to revisit when we have a kitchen to work with.

An actual design book that is a great read - not just beautiful pictures. As someone who owns an old home, Jane Powells' books were invaluable in our renovations.
