I’d give this 3.5 stars. It took awhile to get into the book. It started out kind of slow and took a bit to follow along with who everyone was. The main character, Nicole, seemed a little unrealistic in that she has all these things happen to her, and she just keeps plowing ahead instead of stopping to think how she can better protect herself. She stays far calmer through it all than anyone would. I did enjoy the storyline as far as why such things were happening to her. I always like a good romance in my paranormal books, and the relationship between her and her potential love interest (not saying to avoid spoilers) was very sweet. I’m glad that she discovered more about her true nature through the course of the story.
Interesting take on the paranormal, making it almost normal. Interesting plot and great characters. Nicole and David as main characters were well created and well developed. I had some initial confusion re Artemis, however, that was eventually clarified. The identity of some of the characters have yet to be revealed, I suppose that will be disclosed in subsequent books. This story is sufficiently complete for it to be enjoyed, never fear. Go ahead and read.
I struggled to finish reading this story. I had a hard time liking the main characters. The basic story was confusing: An older wolf shifter man meets a young woman who’s family was murdered. She struggles with awful “nightmares” that might be more than simple “nightmares”. How old is he really?
“It’s nothing, they cut my break line” “It’s nothing they tried to run me off the road” then there is “it’s nothing they tried to stab me”. If you can get past the girl and her lack of personal safety -every chapter, then you might finish the book, I certainly can’t.
A shifter story that was dragged out with lots of characters and overlapping plots. I finished because I always do for whatever book I’m reading. The storyline had a lot of unfinished info regarding characters. Age? Death? Never really explained. Hard to stay involved in the story
This story had me on pins and needles at times. I am a sucker for love and prince charming types. I also love the strength of the women. Was very hard to put story down to sleep. Can't wait until I read the next one.
An interesting story with mystery, danger, supernaturals and love. Some editing issues, as well as difficulty believing characters who are centuries old are still so immature.
Absolutely stunning book well written and a great cast of characters and story line absolutely loved it I couldn't put it down superb will read more from this author
I haven’t read anything from this author before and was pleasantly surprised. There were some spelling errors but they were very minor compared to other eBooks that I’ve read. The main characters in this book are Nicole and David. Nicole, who doesn’t know she’s a werewolf, has recently loss her adoptive parents in a car accident and is feeling a bit lost. She decides to get involved in her parents environmental pressure group SES and because of her interest in photography, Nicole takes photographic evidence of the pollution of a local stream. Unfortunately, she is seen by those responsible for the pollution and so begins a race for her life to get away from them. As she’s trying to get away, she is rescued from certain death by a lone black wolf who leads her to safety through an abandoned tunnel which takes her almost directly to her apartment building. David is a loner who is also a werewolf and when he meets Nicole he is immediately drawn to her. During the process of befriending her, his personal feeling toward her develop. Because of her involvement in SES, numerous attempts are made on her life and if that isn’t bad enough, she meets her biological uncle who deeply unnerves her.
All the characters are well developed including the secondary characters. We learn some of the histories of David’s closest friend Mark and Nicole’s best friend Meg. Mara, a friend of David and Mark, is something of a mystery as is Nicole’s brother, Billy. This is the first book in a trilogy and we don’t get all the answers, but I found the book to be very engaging and I will definitely be reading the rest of the books.
Normally, I’m not a huge fan of wolf shapeshifter novels unless other paranormal creatures are present as well but I was pleasantly surprised to find myself hurrying through each chapter hungering to learn more about Nicole and her mysterious friends. There were a few editing problems here and there but those are easy fixes. As for her characters, I found Nicole to be a very down to Earth character and I completely respect how McLain focused more on Nicole’s strengths—her intelligence, her moral and ethical character—than otherworldly beauty. Nicole has flaws. She wasn’t perfect but that’s what draws the reader in. It’s easier to identify with a character who is more like myself and just so happens to end up with a happy ending rather than an absolutely gorgeous beyond belief, outlandishly genius, and basically all around perfect woman who also ends up with a happy ending. Of course, Ms. Perfect will have a happy ending but what about a girl like me? This is what you can expect to find in A.D. McLain’s novels. Yay for us perfectly imperfect girls! Wolf of the Past was A.D. McLain’s first published novel and she’s given us a taste of her vivid and thrilling imagination. I believe we will see great things from this up and coming author, so be on the look out for her!
The main character, Nicole, is one many who have lost someone dear to them can relate to. Then, there is David, who decides to visit the land his family used to own. A very big fire had destroyed a whole house and the family inside. David is led to a cemetery where suspiciously he bumps his foot on a stone right where his family is buried. He never would have found them in the dark otherwise.
Nicole is very determined to prove that some facts are true and is not above snapping pictures. This story keeps your attention. You will meet Billy, Nicole’s brother, who is checking out some things of his own, looking for someone.
The pages of the book keep the story moving. Everything falls together in the end. I know there is a second book by A. D. McLain coming out soon and I can’t wait to read it. If it is anything like this book she’ll have two winners on her hands.
I loved this book! The attention to detail made this story so vivid in my imagination that I felt like I was in the book. Can't wait to read Wolf of the Present.
