Brigid was a young and lively girl, often scolded for giving away more than she should to the beggars at her doorstep. From butter, to meat, to her father's sword, she gave when she was asked, her heart breaking for those in need. Eventually, Brigid grew to be abbess of a community of thousands, her love and care earning her a place as one of the two most beloved saints of Irish history and one of the great female saints of all Christendom. The lyrical text and Celtic-inspired illustrations make The Life of Saint Brigid an inspiring story of love and generosity for children of any age, particularly for those who admire the faith and culture of Ancient Ireland. I'm an author, editor and overall word-crazed person. I love music in language--love to read, and love to write. I can also do handstands, but I can no longer do a back flip nor a back bend, not even a measly kick-over... Yeah, I used to be a gymnast...
I have a new book, which just released in February 2016. When God Made You is the title... You can see a bit about it on my website! www.janegmeyer.com
This book fills me with wishes. I wish this book had been available when all of my children were younger. With our Irish background, it would have been lovely to learn more about St. Brigid so that we would have had more reason to celebrate her feast day. I bought this book when my youngest child was around 8 or 9. By this time, he was not eager to have me read story books to him any more, but I wish I had done so anyway. Lastly, I wish I had taken the time to visit some of the sites of St. Brigid when I visited Ireland. I let my Irish mom dictate all that we did on our trip, but in studying a map, I see that we were probably within 15 miles of Kildare on one of our drives. O dear St. Brigid, might you ask the Dear Lord to let me make one more trip to Ireland so that I have another chance to visit some of the sights related to your life? I highly recommend this book if you want to share learning about the life of St. Brigid with the children in your life, especially if you are of Irish descent. I love the bold colors of the book's artwork. Though to me the Celtic themed illustrations have a slightly amateurish look, they are thought-provoking with interesting details that are fun to find.
I have to admit to being surprised by how much I loved this book. As a former teacher and current fan of children's books I knew I would enjoy it, but I didn't expect to be so fully pulled into the narrative!
St. Brigid is an inspiring figure, and Jane G. Meyer makes that clear in her gentle and matter of fact telling. Ms. Meyer does not lean into the hardships and sufferings the saint endured, so the book is perfect for young minds.
I enjoyed the narrative style, too. I felt as though I were sitting in a homey, Irish kitchen, drinking tea, being told the story of this incredible saint. The illustrations supported that feeling, as they are representative of Celtic art, and I found that in each picture I noticed something new on a second look. It is certainly a book that I will keep on my shelf, for years to come, and one that I am eager to share with the little ones in my life.
***I received a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.***
Lovely book for reading about Saint Brigid. I especially liked the celtic-inspired illustrations without, as these inspired some of our form-drawing work. We have, I think, 3 different books about Brigid now and this is one of my favorite. It is geared towards a Christian-viewpoint, FYI.
I enjoy reading about the Irish saints, and found this picture book especially well done. The emphasis is on Brigid's Christianity, and this telling skirts some of the more fantastical legends that surround her.
The font has the look of a handwritten uncial alphabet, which seems appropriate, and goes beautifully with the Celtic-inspired illustration. If you purchase it for Kindle, it is best read on an iPad or other tablet that can display two-page spreads in color. It loses much of the spirit of joy when seen in single pages on a black and white e-reader.
If you enjoy reading the lives of the saints--Saint Brigid is someone you've got to meet... Or, if you're interested in Irish history or culture, come and meet one of Ireland's most beloved and inspiring figures... Available at www.conciliarpress.com or on Amazon or other distributors.
