As the twenty-second century dawns, the Lindotian war begins, seeding chaos throughout the galaxy. Casualties of the conflict, Dave Curtis and his fellow students are taken prisoner on an interstellar slave ship, where fear causes many of them to turn on one another. Dave's youth and beauty catch the slaver captain's eye, and he is removed from the hold for special training and sexual indoctrination. Dave panics at being separated from his older friend Beck, but when he meets his instructor, his life is changed forever.
For years Jenna Hilary Sinclair approached creative writing as if she were looking over the edge of a cliff—the view was terrifying but seductive. She couldn’t comprehend how anyone could compose a complex plot and have the patience to put it on the page. But one day she sat down, picked up a pen, and much to her astonishment, a novel began to take shape.
Since that day, Jenna’s been in an exhilarating free fall. She lives her own life plus the lives of her characters, searches for the answers to the most important questions—What is love? Where is courage? Why is there fear?—and has a wonderful time writing gay romance.
Jenna is fiercely in favor of GLBT rights, kindness, keeping promises, and mountains. She lives in the Great American Southwest with her beloved husband, two cats, and a hundred characters dancing in her head. Some of them dance together. She hopes the music never stops.
David Curtis has been taken prisoner along with his fellow students on an interstellar slave ship. Caught in the hold with no hope of rescue, the men are turning on each other and looking for any way to have some shred of control over their own lives ~ namely by coercing or dominating other classmates sexually. Dave has had to constantly evade the sexual advances of his fellow students and his only comfort is spending time with Beck. Beck was an advisor bunking with a first-year student which most likely saved his life when their ship was boarded and all older men were killed. Dave and Beck were friends prior to their capture and they are able to maintain some semblance of that friendship in the dark shadows of the cargo hold.
Dave has high aspirations for his future to go into politics and work his way up to Union prime minister. He keeps a very close eye on his life, and is aware of the prejudice that still exists against homosexuality, even though it is accepted in most Earth societies. For that reason, Dave has denied the thoughts and feelings he has had for men and namely about his friend Beck. But the slaver pirates have a very different idea of what will happen in Dave's future. They see a pretty boy with fair hair and a beautiful body who will be perfect as a sex slave. Dave is drugged and delivered for special sexual training to prepare him to serve the sexual desires of men. His instructor Max is extremely good at his job and does not hesitate to prepare Dave but not everything is as it seems and Dave's life will forever be changed by his time with Max.
Open Doors is a phenomenal story that grabs you from the very beginning and takes you on a journey that involves unexpected twists and turns. This story is science fiction, but it is a setting that is not overwhelming in any way. It is easy to slip into the world created by Jenna and focus on the characters of the story. I had no idea what to expect when I first started reading this story and I was surprised, impressed and moved by the depth and meaning that is threaded throughout this story. There is nothing light about what happens to Dave, he is drugged and forced to submit to sexual acts with no control over his own body or thoughts to be able to resist or defend himself. His training involves being raped while having his thoughts altered with continuous suggestions. Yet at the same time it is intensely erotic, and being inside of Dave's head provides for a captivating scene.
The beauty of this story is how this experience changes Dave, how it opens doors within his life. The conundrum that you are inevitably left to ponder is to what extent the thoughts and desires for men existed within Dave before his training. It is mentioned that Max gives him only a half dose of the drug that forces him into submission. How much of what he thinks and desires is due to the drug and how much was already within Dave and was finally given a chance to escape, in essence a door being opened on a room of feelings kept locked tight in his mind. After his training, if Dave continues to desire sex with men, to what extent is it due to the drug and training to which he was subjected? Would he still have the same feelings and desires if he had not experienced such training?
"Always before, Dave would have protested, walked away, or maybe taken a swing at the guy. But now, under the influence of the drug, his much hiden truth, the truth of his body, was the only truth he knew. With a little gasp, he replied, 'I feel good. I want you to keep touching me.'"
Yet another thing to ponder is which life would be slavery for Dave ~ the one where he is forced to hide his feelings for men in order to protect his political career or the one where he is forced to provide sexual favors for men willing to pay the right price? Is not each a form of slavery? Was Dave really free when he was trapped in the hold or was he given his freedom once being trained to be a slave? As the story states, "There were all different kinds of slavery." and there is no easy answer to any of these questions. The brilliance of this story is that the questions are raised and the reader is left to come to their own conclusions.
The ending wraps up the story beautifully and in a way that was totally unexpected but that is perfect in it's simplicity. I connected to the character of Dave immediately and the characters of Beck and Max each provide additional depth and meaning to the story. This is not a story simply to be read on the surface, but one that is thought-provoking and moving and engaging in all the best ways. I highly recommend this story for anyone that enjoys a story that has you thinking for days after reading. After enjoying two of Jenna's stories I can honestly say that I am hooked and I think you will be too!
