I remember seeing books about these bears when I was little. I was always attracted to the illustrations, the bears look a bit like teddy bears but more like children in bear suits, they are brightly coloured and all have different personalities. In this story the bears go to the seaside, swim, cook on a fire and camp there for the night and the following day go home, tired and happy.

This is a story about five bears, each a different color for easy identification, and their dalmatian dog. They take an overnight trip to the beach and have a lot of fun.
I love this book because it shows that the bears do different activities at the beach and sometimes they also do things together. They also have defined personalities. Charles (the black bear) is their chef. John (the blue one) is the observant one, and although he forgets the ball, he is the one that watches the sunset, that knows about the star constellations, and the one that builds a sand castle. William (the red one) rives the car, gets too tired to keep on walking, eats too much fish, swims around, sleeps early and is clumsy yet playful. Andrew (brown bear) is the fashionista, with his new straw hat and the snorkel gear. He is helpful and a bit of a "scaredy cat", yet he is the first one in the water and the last one out. He is a well prepared bear and the one with all the gear and gadgets! Robert ( the yellow bear) is also an integral part of the group. He is the co-pilot, the one who gets inside the tent to put it up, the one who catches the fish and finds the water too cold, the one who hurries the cook, and plays ball, and swims and dives.
The illustrations are marvelous! They have a lot of texture to them and are colorful and fun. I marveled at the way the illustrators wrapped the water around the bears and the way they delineated the waves and currents. Beautifully rendered.

I mostly loved this for the absolutely gorgeous illustrations :)

This did not go over very well in story time. A bit long for my young group.
