Armageddon Conspiracy

Rate this book
Fast-rising money manager Brent Lucas has no idea that the head of his new firm is a Christian fanatic or that his multi-million dollar job is a set-up until a billion dollars disappears from a client's account--and until he ends up as the only suspect. Determined to clear himself, he goes to his client's home where he finds only corpses. Narrowly escaping, Lucas runs from both the FBI and his would-be killers.

Fueled by memories of his brother's tragic death in the Trade Center and aided by his ex-fiancée, a beautiful cop assigned to the Project Seahawk anti-terrorism taskforce, Lucas begins to unravel a flawlessly planned conspiracy. He discovers his politically unassailable boss has masterminded a plot aimed at bringing about Armageddon-with stolen missiles, depleted nuclear fuel and a band of Muslim terrorists intent on killing the President. As the FBI closes in, Lucas launches his own desperate attempt to stop the madness before it is too late.

“John Thompson's writing is lean and sharp, his narrative voice as assured as a veteran writer's. There's not a false step in this fast-paced thriller - a smart, suspenseful, believable book. I'm waiting for the movie! ”

JOSEPHINE HUMPHREYS, author of Dreams of Sleep and Rich in Love

“I think John Thompson is more than on his way. I think he's there. ”

ANNE RIVERS SIDDONS, author of Off Season and Heartbreak Hotel

“John Thompson uses his experience in the world of finance to create a chilly story of religious fanatics, money and terror. ”

JAMES O. BORN, author of Burn Zone

"'Armageddon Conspiracy' is an extraordinary debut novel ... Bold and pitch-perfect, [Thompson’s] narrative moves with a drive that is part engine and part caboose. He takes no prisoners and leaves no loose ends."

CHARLESTON POST AND COURIER

“So powerful is John Thompson's writing, I can only wonder what he will come up with for his next thriller. Armageddon Conspiracy… is a must read.”

I LOVE A MYSTERY.COM

“…a fast-paced story of international intrigue… .”

TOLEDO BLADE

“This is a great page turner mystery/thriller set in the world of Wall Street hedge funds and money swaps... Written with style, intelligence, and insight.”

PAUL ARMSTRONG, Book Reporter

“Armageddon Conspiracy is an extraordinary debut novel, as disturning as it is realistic in its portrayal of the brutality of intolerant terrorists, people who wish us harm for nothing more than believing in the American Dream.”

I have always had stories in my head, and these days I get to write them. I like to get up early, make a cup of coffee, then sit down and start putting words on the page. When I do that, I’m usually writing thrillers for adults or mysteries for Middle Grade readers. I write thrillers because that’s one of the genres I particularly love to read, and I write Middle Grade mysteries because my daughter was 12 when I wrote my first one, and I wrote it for her.
My first book, a thriller called ARMAGEDDON CONSPIRACY, about Wall Street, terrorism and religious fanaticism ended up being a finalist for Best Fiction by the SIBA (The Southern Independent Booksellers), and it won the IPPY Gold Medal for Best Thriller of the Year. The second book in that series is THE HONG KONG DECEPTION.
I have also co-written two occult thrillers with Jack Heath. In spite of the fact that Jack’s ancestor, Rebecca Nurse, was hung as a witch in Salem, MA in 1692, he is a normal guy and a lot of fun as a co-writer. The two books, and there will be a third next year, involve all kinds of exciting stuff like modern day Devil worship, human sacrifice and spirits. The first book, SALEM VI: REBECCA’S RISING has gotten great reviews and been optioned for a movie by a major producer. The second book CHAIN OF SOULS was released in 2013.
My Middle Grade mystery, also released in 2013 is THE GIRL FROM FELONY BAY. I wrote it under the name J. E. Thompson to keep readers from getting confused. THE GIRL FROM FELONY BAY has gotten great reviews, and The Junior Library Guild named it a Monthly Selection. It is the story of two girls, Abby and Bee, who live on a plantation located on an island outside of Charleston, South Carolina. Together they solve a couple of mysteries, tangle with a bully as well as some alligators and poisonous snakes, learn a lot about themselves and their intertwined family histories, right an enduring social wrong, and nearly lose their lives in the process. The sequel will be released in Fall 2014.
A little bit about me—I was born in the Midwest, went to Middlebury College where my fascination with writing started to grow, worked for a long time in New York City, and now reside in Charleston, SC, where I write every day and live with my wife and my daughter, my Boykin Spaniel, Lulu, and a horribly behaved Jack Russell named Mr. Bean.

I started to read this book and then put it down over the Christmas holidays and picked it up again in January. I'm glad I did,. The plot was good: fundamental Christians using and funding Muslim terrorists in order to fulfil the prophecy of 'Armageddon' as laid out in the book of 'Revelations'.
If you can believe that the hero is able to do anything despite being severely wounded in the abdomen and the arm, then you'll enjoy this book hugely.
You must suspend your disbelief in order for the plot to work but it is believable and therefore I found the suspension of disbelief easier to do.
An intriguing read ... and to some extent quite a worrying read, given the nature of the storyline!

Finding it difficult to get a job after he blew the whistle on his last firm for insider trading, Brent Lucas finally accepts an undercover job on behalf of the justice department to investigate Genesis Advisers, who are also under suspicion of the same thing. What Bent discovers however, is something he hadn't expected. His new boss, Prescott Biddle is a fanatical Christian, who says he has a direct line to God and that's how he knows what the market will do. It's strange, all right, but not illegal, so Lucas wonders what he's really doing here and he's barely at the firm a month before everything comes to a head and Lucas is on the run, framed for murder and embezzlement and desperately trying to get anyone to believe him.

This is a deftly plotted, well-executed thriller. I enjoyed most of it, but I felt disappointed that we as readers find out a lot about the 'bad guys', who they are, what they are willing to do and their motivations a long while before Lucas did. It would have worked so much better if the reader found out things at the same time as Lucas did, it would have added an extra layer of tension. So instead of just Lucas wondering who he can trust, the reader is unsure as well. It lets the story down somewhat that the reader gets to know so much before the main protagonist and diminishes some of the tension.

What makes this stand out from a lot of thrillers is the characterisation. Brent Lucas is just a normal man, he's not some ex elite special forces chap who can kill a man barehanded with his eyes closed. He's just an ordinary guy caught up in extraordinary circumstances and we really get to know Lucas as a character here: from his disappointment with his break-up with Maggie, to his grief over losing his family. After his father's death his mother killed herself by setting fire to the house with Lucas and his brother in it. His brother became a fireman and died during 9/11 and parts of the book are Lucas talking with his heroic dead brother, which I found rather poignant.

There are various point of view throughout the book, from Maggie to Biddle and Abu Sayeed, the mastermind behind the importation of the missiles in a bid to assassinate the president and each has their own part to play in the narrative. None of the characters come across as two-dimensional, they are all fully realised with all of their own baggage, which makes them stand out more.

A good read if you enjoy fast-paced thrillers.

It is a page turner, no doubt. But why do the characters in books like this have to be so 2-dimensional? Why is their dialogue stilted? And, when they are wounded, shot or otherwise incapacitate, or have seen allies die or have killed foes, why do they have to think of nothing but sex with the one they've forsaken, regret forsaking and are, of course, destine to get back together with? Oh, and there are four people on a boat with no radio, damn. Now how do they contact the authorities that the bad men are just a yard away? Four people, no cell phones? Sorry, that did not work for me. But I liked the twist: the Christian fundamentalists where just as bad as the Islamic ones. At least this was not a mid-east bad, west is good book.

Regularly pick up free e-books on the Kobo website looking for authors I haven't heard of; new authors; or something different. Really glad I chose this free e-book - really enjoyed it. I particularly liked the way the chapters were written from different characters' points of view - it wasn't every chapter and didn't detract from the story in anyway, in fact, it enhanced it and made it more thrilling. Will definitely be reading more of John Thompson's work.

Bold and absolutely pitch-perfect, Thompson’s narrative moves with fierceness that is part engine and part caboose. He takes no prisoners and leaves no loose ends. He is the real McCoy. As for the watchers and tellers of the world—Thompson will stand as a master observer and storyteller

A great thrilling story that kept me engaged and page-flipping instead of going to sleep. However the ending seemed rushed. What should have been 100 pages was crammed into the last 10 (and oddly full of typos on the ePub). I'll consider reading book 2.
