Die 70er Jahre – diese magische Ära zwischen den swinging Sixties und den dekadenten 80ern, die Epoche der Schlaghosen und des Afro-Looks, das Zeitalter der Diskomusik und der Plateauschuhe. Als der Krieg in Vietnam tobte und der Kalte Krieg eskalierte, begann Hollywood einzuheizen und setze seinen Wirtschaftskrisen ein Ende; mit Erfolgen wie Star Wars, Jaws, The Exorcist und The Godfather. Dank großer Regisseure wie Spielberg und Lucas brachte das amerikanische Kino ein neues Phänomen hervor: den Blockbuster. Sein Einfluss reichte über den Atlantik, wo in Frankreich die Nouvelle Vague gerade ausstarb, bis nach Deutschland, wo das neue deutsche Kino von Fassbinder, Wenders und Herzog seine besten Zeiten feierte. Die sexuelle Revolution kam auf die Leinwand (vorsichtig in den USA, freizügiger in Europa), vor allem in Bertoluccis skandalösem Last Tango in Paris. Zugleich lagen nostalgische Filme hoch im Kurs (The Sting, American Graffiti), bewegte Bilder über Vietnam (Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter) und die neuen Antihelden wie Robert De Niro, Al Pacino und Dustin Hoffman.

About the author

Jürgen Müller is a German art historian. He holds the chair of Early Modern and Modern Art History at the Technical University of Dresden.

He studied art history at the universities of Bochum, Münster, Pisa, Paris and Amsterdam, and has worked as an art critic and curated numerous exhibitions. He is also the editor of Taschen's movies by decade series.

short introduction about the seventies movies and cinematic themes , then a series essays about some of the important films of this decade , the essays vary in quality but mostly informative . the book itself is wonderfully designed with lots of photos from films used .

overall , this book is more of a shelf book , more valuable in collecting , keeping and representing .
