This book was written in the 90’s, and it’s not timeless. I got tired of reading about ‘choosing’ to become a lesbian and losing their straight life. As if being gay is a choice, and you can only be attracted to one gender.
Again, once I realized it was written in the 90’s I wasn’t as upset because I know that’s what was thought back then. But I didn’t feel the need to finish the book.

I’m not sure if the editors of this collection of interviews deliberately chose women with similar histories--alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic abuse--and similar perspectives on their lesbian relationships--most seem to feel that it was less a biological characteristic than a conscious choice. It may also be the interview style itself—each woman was clearly given the same set of questions to answer, regardless of her circumstances—that leeches the uniqueness and color from the voices here. Whatever it is, the result is a wholly uninteresting treatment of an otherwise interesting subject.
