Rate this book
Excerpt from The Cock, the Mouse and the Little Red Hen

Little Red Hen, all this time? Well, sad to say, the Cock and the Mouse had both got out of bed on the wrong side that morning. The Cock said the day was too hot, and the Mouse grumbled because it was too cold. They came grumbling down to the kitchen, where the good little Red Hen, looking as bright as a sunbeam, was bustling about. Who'll get some sticks to light the fire with? She asked. I shan't, said the Cock. I shan't, said the liouse. Then I'll do it myself, said.

This old retold folklore is about how a greedy fox takes advantage of a cock, a mouse, and a little red hen. It is not long before the hen saves the day, but the cock and the mouse feel pretty guilty for acting cross and lazy when the hen needed help around the house. I would most likely use this book when teaching 1st or maybe 2nd graders.

One way you could use this book in the classroom is have students write an alternate solution to the conflict in the story. Students would need to figure out a new way that the hen, cock, and mouse escape from the sack. Another way to use this book is to highlight the characters and talk about how they are all similar and different. Students can also learn a lesson from this story; it is important to always work hard and never take advantage of your friends or anyone else.

This is a wow book for me because it is an old story told well. It is simple but fun and has a great message behind it. Students will also get to learn about responsibility.
