This hide-and-seek book is full of things to look at and talk about as you journey through the changing year. In every scene, there are different items to find. Learn all about the seasons as well as calendars through the ages in the fun and informative notes at the end of the story.
Tessa Strickland is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of independent children’s publisher Barefoot Books. As Stella Blackstone, she has written many bestselling picture books for children. As an editor, she has worked with authors and illustrators all over the world.
Not only does Skip through the Seasons introduce the seasons and the months, but it's also a search and find book with a list of things for children to look for in the illustrations. This is a great way for children to practice their visual literacy skills, and its fun to see what you can find. Somehow it's quite satisfying to find everything on the list. Each list focuses on items specific to the season and the month which helps create connections in children's minds. At the end of the book is additional information about different calendars, where the month names came from, the source of the seasons, and the days of the week in six different languages. This book is both fun and educational.
A brief look at the year and seasons. Includes seek and find objects on every page. The book includes a brief history of the calender with the month's origins, various types of calenders throughout the ages, and the days of the week in other languages.
Though it's geared for Northern Hemisphere readers (sorry Southern Hemispherers), this is still a good starter book to teach kids about the seasons. It goes through all the months, then gives a minor lesson on why we have seasons (axial tilt!) and the history behind the calendar used by Western Civilization (as well as talking about various other calendars). At the back of the book the days of the week are listed in several languages and there's also a list of deities associated with each day from several different cultures.
LOVE the shapes and illustrations. Wording and content is spectacular and helps guide the reader to explore each page with more detail. Good book to learn the names of the months and weather and life experiences that are typical for these months. However, may be confusing to our friends in Texas who do not experience the changes of the season.
The pictures are beautiful, as is always the case with Barefoot Books. My son and I enjoyed reading the book and the different information in the back. We also really enjoyed finding the different objects.
A book that can grow with your child! From talking about the pictures and finding objects, to them independently reading the items they are looking for, right through discussions about mythology and other calendar systems throughout history. This is a simple book that can be enjoyed for many years!
A multi-purpose book. Use it to teach the little ones the months of the year and the older ones what the name of the months mean, and a Where's Waldo type of game for everyone.
Teaches children about the different seasons of the year. They are also required to look for specific items in each picture. This would be a fun book for children.
Some really interesting facts about the origin of the names of the months and days of the weeks; some interesting information on linguistic relationships too.
