Spott's Canine Miscellany

Rate this book
Schott’s Original Miscellany was a publishing phenomenon. It sired a host of sequels and parodies. But no matter how patiently and for how many years they begged, the potential canine readership was left to pine, unserved. Until now.

Spott’s Canine Miscellany is the obsessive dog owner’s answer to the original. It echoes (and parodies) the randomness of entry and stylish design of the original, but has been written entirely for dogs and their doting owners and admirers. The result is an irresistible potpourri of canine facts, embracing the essential, the trivial, the intriguing, and the extraordinary. In the pages of this perfect kennel-top or coffee-table book to paw through at random, you will discover such whimsical treats as dog epigraphs, the origins of breed names, an international guide to the word “dog,” the world’s oldest dog, award-winning dogs, Aesop’s fabled dogs, dog-bite statistics, a Lassie profile, and dogs who went down with the Titanic. It is, in short, the perfect companion for your perfect companion.

This book is a collection of random fun facts about dogs, from Asop's fable to popular dog names in few countries.
This book gave me joy during bathroom break.

This short book is a collection of facts about dogs, ranging from historical details, to list of popular breeds by country, popular names by country, and the assorted odd trivia such as the variations in tracks made by domesticated versus wild dog-like creatures, and such items as quotes about dogs. Also included are tidbits on allergies in dogs, behavioral questions such as tail wagging, and the origins of the names of some breeds, such as spaniels. This is a delightful mix of knowledge about dogs, that can easily be picked up and turned to any page for a nugget of information. It has the added bonus of what might be a flat-coated retriever lying upside down on the cover! I would say that this will appeal primarily to dog lovers or those particularly fascinated by trivia.

This is a take off on Stott's Miscellany, which contains little bits of things. The little bits in this one all relate in one way or another to the doggy kingdom. It's a good bathroom book--not any plot or anything to hold your attention for long. Even very slow readers can get through a snippet or two.
