Considered "the new Joy of Cooking" by authorities from Food & Wine to Vegetarian Times, this major cookbook introduces a contemporary cuisine that "tastes great and happens to be healthy." 1300 recipes, plus 300 pages of valuable kitchen information. 580 pages, illustrated.
This is the most excellent vegetarian cuisine, very wholesome, including dairy and eggs, assortment of vegetables and fruits, and nuts. We are not vegetarians but we don't eat meat every day, just a 2 times a week, we also eat fish and seafood and some chicken. So whenever I want a nice recipe for healthy baking made with honey, I open this book. Whenever I want a vegetable dish that can be satisfying all by itself, I open this book. God bless Nikki and David.
A friend recommended this to me in 1988 and I didn’t really think much of it. Getting new eyes changed all that and reading it it’s pretty terrific! The idea of peanut butter on banana bread really got me so I made it and it was pretty good
I wrote "May 22, 1991" on the title page of this book, so I got it shortly after I got married. I was looking for quick, wholesome, "unfancy" recipes to cook for my near-vegetarian husband and me.
This book has recipes that are that - I reread it weekly, and am still 22 years later discovering recipes I have not tried and techniques to use with foods I'm not as familiar with.
The covers fell off (I repaired it with duct tape!) and the binding is cracked, but it's still one of the cookbooks on my shelf that refer to most often.
I bought this cookbook SEVERAL years ago and I LOVE it! I have made many of the recipes and have used the techniques and basic cooking instructions to create my own dishes.
It is definitely worth buying if you are into vegetarian or near-vegetarian cooking.
My copy is so worn that now the cover is taped on it - I probably need a new copy myself.
