Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.
Lora Leigh is a New York Times bestselling author of erotic romance novels. Leigh started publishing with electronic publisher Ellora's Cave in 2003. Leigh's longest-running series is The Breeds. She won the 2009 RT Award for erotica. Leigh was born in Ohio and raised in Martin County, Kentucky, US.
I'll be the first to admit that romance novels about captives are probably really difficult to pull off - you've either gotta go straight up dark erotica and embrace the idea of non-consensual sex (the word we use to pretty up rape in our romance novels) between your main characters, or, you go the route of many a pirate-themed bodice ripper and have the dark captain woo the reluctant captive (only then do they get it on and eventually fall in love).
This story tried to be the latter, but missed the mark by a mile.
Early in the book, the lady said 'no' - she was very clear about that - but the main character, Luc, stuck is cock in her face anyway.
Cue my total swoon.
Or not.
Yeah, how about not?
Later, Luc figures out from Melina's reactions to physical contact that she's probably been raped or sexually assaulted in the past. His response is to try to seduce her out of her fear - backing her up into walls and beds, putting his hands all over her, threatening to spank her if she doesn't give in, etc.
Yup, real classy guy, this Luc.
Needless to say, I loathed Luc pretty much from the get-go. The author tried to give him a sheen of redeemable qualities, but they fell very, very flat.
Melina wasn't any better or more relatable as a character. She was portrayed as being a doormat for her parents and sister all her life (like, far past any believable levels of family loyalty and/or betrayal - throttle back that melodrama, Lora Leigh!). Then, after she was kidnapped, she ran around Luc's house playing a 1950s housewife, cleaning until the place sparkled and jumping to do his bidding when he came in from the fields and practically yelled, "Where's my dinner, woman?!"
The few times that Melina didn't immediately do Luc's bidding, her denials felt juvenile - like a teenager arguing with her parents over a curfew, not a woman trying to protect herself from a sex-crazed captor who had drunk too much of his own Kool-aid and thought he was fucking irresistible.
I especially loathed how the author always tried to balance or wave away Luc's reprehensible behaviours by mentioning how attractive Melina found him. Like, forced sexual contact is A-OK as long as the dude has a nice smile and good hair? YUCK. Eventually Melina fell in love with Luc, but I struggled to find anything on page that would explain that level of emotional connection.
As you can probably guess, I loathed this book and every character within it.
Oh, and a special note to the author: RAPE IS RAPE. It isn't made any "better" or"worse" because of the gender of the person being raped, nor by the gender of the person committing the crime. Implying that Melina's sexual assault by Bertha was especially heinous because Bertha was a woman and Melina wasn't gay is beyond ridiculous.
Found this in the bargain bin and I feel like I’ve been robbed. He threatens sexual violence and she wants him. Even before this year that’s just wrong.
This book is about Jack Riley (who is friends with Jardin from the first book) and Angel Manning. He travels all over selling horses, cattle, and whatnot that he and Jardin raise and breed. This book has a bit of a paranormalish aspect to it. Angel’s family has a torque that is passed down from mother to daughter for many generations. Angel’s father sells the torque to Jack. Angel is beyond upset and vows to get it back no matter what. Even saying she will steal it from Jack if she has to. Maybe the torque is working its druid magic is mysterious ways. Maybe Jack is supposed to Angel’s wolf mate. The torque has a wonderful story behind it. Angel and Jack are drawn to each other right away but Angel has been hurt in the past. Jack may be considered a player by some but he is honest and doesn’t try to make himself seem any different from how he really is. I liked reading about how the two handle each other in this book. I liked the mystical aspect of this book it added a interesting touch to it. I look forward to reading more books by Lora in the future. I was given this book in return for an honest review.
I finished this but with a heavy dose of skimming. I thought I'd try another book by this author that wasn't in the 'Breed' series; hoping, in vain, that it would be more to my liking. It doesn't show in my GR library but I've tried quite a few books by Lora Leigh over the years because my sister was a big fan and wanted me to enjoy them as much as she did. This is one point where we forever diverge I guess.
Both main characters in this story were TSTL and the author used every manipulative plot device you can think of to try and make you feel supportive of both of them. I'm done with this author.
I like the plot, the story line and every thing! this is the first book of Lora Leigh that I read. I can feel Melina on how she deal with her parent's and her evil drug addict twin sister. I really hate it on how her parents manipulate her to save her drug addict twin sister Maria from her crimes. I love the twist and also the erotic love story between Luc and Melina. The story kinda short but it's a nice one.
2.5 Stars. I have my reasons. I think I'm going to write a blog post about them though.
Alright. So I actually finished reading this. Not because I suddenly started enjoying it after my previous update - but because I'm collecting half-finished novels and that disturbs my sense of peace.
The first thing I want to say is that Lora Leigh is actually a pretty good writer. It was why I chose to read this book after my previous disasters. Because Lora Leigh has not disappointed me before. And I was hovering at the 3.5-star mark at the end of the first few chapters, even though the whole 'sort of secret' twin thing was a bit of a stretch of the imagination.
But the fact that she went with the whole overly dominant alpha male threatening assault of the most terrible kind to get his way immediately dropped this to a one-star rating for me. Then the quality of writing (excluding the vulgarity that occurred) and the fact that he-man wannabe cowboy had a brief moment of clarity after terrifying the living fucq out of Melina earned it a few points.
Combined with the fact that Luc has grey eyes and dark hair (a particular fancy of mine), there was an almost 3-star rating on the horizon. 2.75 maybe. But then anal play happened and I just noped. I know a lot of women who enjoy it, who even crave it. I am a firm exit only girl and it ALWAYS turns me off.
I am truly sorry. But I just couldn't enjoy this. Not even a little bit. No matter how much I tried. I will not avoid this author though, because I've read other books of hers that weren't bad. I just. Nope.
I'm usually not super into romance books because it feels like every time I pick up a romance book either via my Kindle or in the bookstore or Amazon, it was basically cheap pornography that read as if a twelve year old watched something they weren't supposed to a copied it all down in word and there was absolutely NO story what so ever, BUT after getting into some bookish talk with a new friend she HIGHLY recommended reading some of Lora Leigh's work - well as it turned out, we took a trip to our local Books-A-Million that day and she found some books for her collection, two in fact and we decided to do a book swap together.
The edition that I read was Rugged Texas Cowboy, two stories in one, and Cowboy and the Captive was the first story.
The prologue had me hooked within the first paragraph and I couldn't out the book down until I finished the story.
I was absolutely BLOWN away, since I gave up on romance books a while ago, it was so refreshing to see a phenomenal plot that incorporated steamy sex scenes instead of one poorly written rump fest after another with no real story to be found what-so-ever.
If you've been let down by romances before, I'd highly suggest checking out Lora Leigh's books and giving her a try because the woman knows how to write hot bods, steamy sex, AND give you a plot that is cohesive and actually makes sense for the characters who find themselves pitting together.
I read this book as part of a 2 in one book (Rugged Texas Cowboy) and since I can't find that to review I'm leaving it here.
Rugged Texas Cowboy by Lora Leigh is like hitting the jackpot, you get two book in one. Both books are well-written and populated with amazing characters. The first book, Cowboy And The Captive is Luc and Melina's story of mistaken identity. This is my favorite of the two books. There's plenty of drama, action, humor and sizzlin' sexy bits. The second book, Cowboy And The Thief is Jack and Angel's story. Their tale is loaded with drama, humor and yes, enough heat to start a bonfire. I enjoyed reading Rugged Texas Cowboy and look forward to reading more from Lora Leigh in the future. Both of the stories in this book are complete, no cliff-hangers.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.
3.5 stars This is a re-issue of an old Ellora’s Cave book by Lora Leigh. It’s a reread for me. I’m not sure if it’s been re-edited but it should. There are conflicting details and some of the word choices are off-putting. I graded it above average because the story-telling is solid, the main characters are likable if too-good-to-be-true, and the love scenes are sexy. My main complaint with this and with many of Ms. Leigh’s books is that the villains are one-dimensional. They have no reason for doing bad things, they’re just pure evil with no redeeming qualities. I specially hate it when the main baddie is female. They seem to be more cruel, more heartless.
A good fun and gripping read about a mistaken kidnapping and revenge. Though there is some humour in this it also has a bit of darkness. Great characters and I hope the brother Joey will get his book too one day. Really cannot understand the parents in this and how blinded they were to Maria's problems and actions. They don't deserve either Melina or Joey in their lives. Just worried Melina will allow them near their child. Boy not a good thing to do. I have read and reviewed this book many years ago in a two book set with another author. I liked it so much I grabbed it as a solo. My previous reviews are missing. I notice both books 1 & 2 are now in a book together but I do not know if they have been updated.
This book is the first for Luc and Joe and how they ended up on the wild ride they are o n. Two years ago Luc almost lost his life and best friend. Now with help from another friend. His plan is to help the woman who was the catalyst for it all.
Melina is always quiet and withdrawn from her family. Her twin sister is needy and destructive and they always want her to take the fall and pretend to be her sister. Now she's once again been put in place to take the fall for her sister.
Great story. Thrilling from the beginning - a story about revenge and mistaken identification. I find it disheartening that parents can love one child more than another. I'm the mother of 2 boys and they are night and day. But I love them both equally! How can parents do that to their children? How were they completely taken in with Maria and leaving Melina out in the cold is beyond me. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
I hope the brother Joey will get his book too one day.
Well, wasn’t this a spicy read 🌶️, and I do mean spicy. The book had its fair share of dark themes—definitely trigger-worthy—such as kidnapping, attempted rape, drug use, and deep family dysfunction. It was… okay. The rugged, dark cowboy figure was alluring and added an edge to the story, but overall, it lacked a wow factor for me. While the steamy moments delivered, the plot didn’t quite capture my attention or leave a lasting impression. A decent read, but not one I’ll revisit.
Erotic. Frustrating. What most women desire, some won’t admit. I am unashamed to say I REALLY LIKED IT!! Quick and easy to read. Have no feelings towards the characters, you kinda get lost in the action...
It’s pure fantasy and dark erotica!! Don’t buy into the captive storyline but cowboys are my guilty pleasure ;) hahaha...
Alright, I didn't love the beginning of this story. I mean kidnapping a woman with not the best intentions in mind? Yeah... not such a huge fan. Particularly the anger coming off of the lead male. It was pretty uncomfortable and problematic. But, Melina was quickly able to balance that out. Which is honestly a style I'm getting used to with Leigh's writing.
Once I got over the nope factor of the beginning of this story, I started to really enjoy this. The passion just leaped off the pages. But, so did Melina's strength of self and character. I mean, I totally get why she falls for the guy, but I mostly just fell for her...
The lead romance is obviously the main draw of this story. But the dog in this managed to steal the show. Which, in my opinion is what frequently happens. I'm completely obsessed with dogs... he is just too ridiculously sweet and a great comedic relief when things are getting a bit intense in the relationship department.
This was both an easy read and a bit uncomfortable in places. I think mostly because I found not only the premise that begins the relationship a bit wow. But also Melina's family and treatment of her... that was just damn heartbreaking.
This was a fast paced story with good characters and a great story. It definitely is a page turner - I loved it and didn't hesitate to give the book 5 stars - very highly recommended!!
Read this title as part of a combined printing with Cowboy and the Thief, under the title Rugged Texas Cowboys.
Major objection: The threat of forced fellatio was used by the hero to punish his heroine, which didn't fit the overall feel of the stories. (In a dark psychological or BDSM romance, it might work, but that's not what these are.)
Minor objection: The language, especially in steamy scenes, was somewhere between archaic and ridiculous. Words like "sodden" and "cervix" felt out of place, as did frequent mentions of the heroine's womb.
Even so, I finished the story. The writing was smooth and descriptive, the dialogue was natural, and I liked the characters (for the most part). The book isn't bad; it's just from another time and I guess I'm a more modern girl.
Melina has always been the good stand-in for her more outlived twin sister, Maria. When Melina was coerced by their parents to take the fall and go to jail instead of Maria, she was almost raped and severely beaten. Now Melina is kidnapped by the man that fills her dreams.
Luc is filled with thought of revenge. Revenge for the close encounter with death Maria dealt him and his best friend. He has planned for this abduction and now everything is ready to be set in motion. But the woman he thinks is Maria doesn´t react as he thinks a drug addict should. Slowly it dawns on him that the woman really is Melina as she claimes.
The story is labeled as erotic and, well, there sure are a lot of steam between Melina and Luc but the story is really sweet. Ms Leigh is a master at showing you with rather subtle means how they are falling for each other, how they change their behavior over time. I love the way Melinas relationship with her cat is written. I love my cats as fiercely so at times I got all teary eyed. The story is rather short though. I would love to know more about Melina and Luc (and Lobo the dog and Mason the cat).
Melina was the good twin and Maria was the bad one... but it went deeper than that... her parents used Melina to allow Maria to avoid punishment as her behaviour got completely out of control... but her brother loves Melina and he has a plan to save her from her sister's mess.. nothing could go wrong ... could it? Wow what a ride... I don't want it to be over!!! I want more about Luc and Melina and his wolf called Lobo and her fat cat Mason who only fight with each other when Melina is in the room....LOL
For as short as this book is, it was really cute. The romance had a great flow to it, not rushed, but didn't lag. To be honest, it reminded me of a Christmas Hallmark movie. So, it wasn't during winter time, but the way to romance was portrayed and the way it all played out it was very Hallmark like and I just kept picturing Hallmark actors in place of the character. Adorable, light, well-written story. One that I can see myself reading again :)
Liked it good ok read for me. Melina was just perfect in regards to her character and Jordin loved him all in all good read and plot what a sh&^% parents she has though. You can choose your friends but not your family.
Not the best Lora Leigh book, but still a pretty good book. The cowboy takes revenge on the girl Maria by kidnapping her, only it is not her he kidnaps it is her twin. Of course they fall in love. All in all a good read.
