A very sweet, special relationship between the romantic couple, and an alpha, wounded hero who is gentle and considerate, make “Counting on the Cowboy”, by Karen Foley (Tule Publishing), a very entertaining read.
Luke is such a wonderful hero, we have to like him, even with his cockiness, bossiness and alphaness, because, in the end, he’s so caring, respectful and sweet with the heroine.
Thankfully, his “brash masculinity”, which wasn’t very appealing to me in the beginning, doesn’t translate into rudeness or plain machismo. A difficult balance that somehow the author managed to maintain, along with the heroine’s doubts and reservations about him.
Luke is honorable, too. His super confidence is ever so toned down with the way he tries to hide his condition and the candidness he later on admits and displays it. There’s no melodrama about it.
And what a heart-warming connection he has with his military dog.
Jorie is a great heroine, too, her insecurities and lack of self-confidence are well written and make her a believable and relatable character.
This was a fast read with a secret crush trope, great side characters and a strong sense of family and community ties.

Light and entertaining, this story brings readers back to Last Stand,Texas where retired military policeman Luke Claiborne, also a volunteer fire fighter, finds love with vet tech Jorie Russell. She was his sister’s best friend as a young teenager and had a crush on him, not that he noticed, but he’s certainly noticing her now. Jorie, meanwhile, doesn’t thing she’s good enough for Luke—she lives in a double wide trailer on the wrong side of town—and it’s fun watching her try to hide her attraction to him.
I loved Jorie’s dedication to the animals she’s rescued and cares for and her inner strength. She’s a woman to look up to and respect, no matter what she might think of herself. I also loved Luke. He might be frustrated that Jorie would put her life at risk to rescue a cat and her kittens but he’s honourable to the core and the things he does to help Jorie and lighten her load had me admiring him enormously.
This story is full of small town and family values, which I love. It’s nice to see people looking out for each other and just about every character in this book has a kind and caring approach to their friends and neighbours. At its heart though is a tender love story between two people who really deserve each other.

Sometimes, you just have to sit back and enjoy a book. This is a nice story about a vet tech struggling to sustain an animal rehab center and the cowboy who enters her life. Sex situations and the F word, but overall, an easy read.

This story is really emotional. Many issues are addressed that sometimes make it hard to hang in there. Very well written, A true joy.

Small Town

Cute small town romance. Like the solider coming home part. Always a good thing when soldiers make it home even if they are injured.

"Counting On The Cowboy" was genuinely fun read from Karen Foley.

Luke Claiborne is one cowboy you'll fall in love with his abrasive behavior but with a heart of gold and he sure knows how to make his woman happy. Jorie Russel, despite her past and insecurities, know what makes her man happy!

An enjoyable read!

I voluntarily read a advanced reader's copy of this book for a honest opinion.

A heart-warming story of possible romance, friendship and coming together. Counting on the Cowboy by Karen Foley is book two in the Riverrun Ranch. I enjoyed how the author wrote the storyline with Jorie and the animals she helped. I can't wait to read the next book in this series and see where it takes us.

You have got to be kidding me

I am giving this a generous 2 stars bc in order to read this you have to suspend ALL belief in anything normal. Jorie rehabs wild life so they can be released back into nature but seriously, how she does this while being TSTL is beyond me. The car, the tires, and the fact that she thinks it only cost 20$ to fix her car? Hmmm, nope. The attraction between she and Luke is non existent. His refusal to wear a hearing aid is as ridiculous as can be. Considering the fact that he is a volunteer firefighter and it is important for him to be able to take direction? Just no…SPOILERS AHEAD…Moving on to the person who trespassed, deliberately caused damage to property and started a fire that burned down Jorie’s house and she wasn’t charged with anything? That is at least a misdemeanor and 2 felonies, adding in that they were lucky the fire didn’t spread? Not happening. To top it off Jorie offers her a job once she rebuilds. I’m sorry but compassion only goes so far. This further proves Jorie is TSTL.

Can she finally get the happily-ever-after she’s always longed for?
This is Jorie Russell and Luke Claiborne's story.
She pulled her little SUV into the farthest corner of the gravel, weed-choked parking lot, well away from the emergency vehicles. She’d been on her way home from a long day’s work at Honeyman’s Veterinary Hospital when the firetrucks raced up behind her, sirens wailing and lights flashing. She pulled over and allowed them to pass, and then followed them. She’d been horrified to see flames engulfing one side of the old warehouse that had once been a distribution center for local peaches. All she could think about was the feral cat who lived in inside amongst the wooden pallets and old peach crates. The last time she’d checked on the animal, the cat had been in the advanced stages of pregnancy. Had she delivered her kittens? Were they even now trapped in the warehouse, too frightened or disoriented to escape?
Keeping a wary eye on the firefighters, Jorie turned off her engine and slipped out of the driver’s seat. She opened the back of the SUV and retrieved a small pet carrier and a can of cat food with a pull-tab lid. The town of Last Stand had a trap-neuter-release program for the feral cats in the region, and Jorie always carried several small animal crates in the back of her vehicle, as well as food and first aid supplies. She’d been trying to capture this particular cat for weeks, but the sly feline was proving to be elusive. With one eye on the first responders, she walked as quickly as she could along the side of the building toward the back of the warehouse, where she knew she’d find an unlocked door. She’d accessed the warehouse numerous times before, but promised herself if there was any sign of smoke or flames, she would abandon her mission. But she had to at least try to rescue the scruffy calico she’d affectionately dubbed Taco.
As soon as she was out of sight of the firefighters, Jorie broke into a run but when she rounded the back of the building, she was dismayed to see the access door that had always hung askew, had been secured with a thick padlock. There were no windows and no other doors that she could see. If Taco was inside, she would have no way to escape! Jorie turned to run back to the front of the warehouse . . . and barreled directly into a man’s hard, unrelenting body.
Luke Claiborne was furious. With her.
All the times she’d daydreamed about meeting him again, she’d never imagined this particular scenario. Worse, there wasn’t so much as a flicker of recognition in his eyes, although she did notice he wasn’t at all shy about giving her the once over. He raked her with a look so thorough that Jorie felt momentarily exposed.
“What are you doing?” His voice was harsh with disbelief, even as his dark eyes flickered between the cage and the can of food she carried, to the padlocked door. He knew exactly what she’d hoped to do.
Counting on the Cowboy by Karen Foley is a 3 star book.

Counting on the Cowboy is the second title in the Riverrun Ranch series – and while its story is self-contained and complete I’d still recommend reading the entire series (if you can) for not only the sense of continuing with friends but Swipe Right for a Cowboy is another excellent story involving this tight-knit family.

Not every war injury is visible, that is certainly true for Luke who lost hearing in one ear during a blast. His injury has ended his military career and now Luke is back home picking up the pieces of his life – and missing his K-9 partner who he had to leave behind. He’s about to get an unexpected reminder of how time passes when, as a volunteer fireman, he encounters a female trying to enter a burning warehouse to rescue a feral cat and her kittens. He may not recognize Jorie at first, but he does recall her being around with his sister at the ranch. With a bit of an age gap, and certainly different life experiences he’s noticing the caring woman Jorie has grown into. She does have a way with critters, great, small, wild, tame… and it seems she just may have a way with his wounded soul as well.

Jorie has a love of animals, and the determination to live down the girl from “the wrong side of the tracks” reputation that her irresponsible mother gained for them. In reality, no one (of importance) thinks that way about Jorie, they take her at face value as she is. But she has that image in her mind (and one stalker to reinforce it) so she’s always trying to show her ‘good’ qualities. Jorie has friends, more than she sometimes realizes who would never think badly of her for where she lived or the actions of her mother. Now she’s created her own wildlife preserve at home while working as a vet tech. She’s always had a crush on Luke, and now she starting to think there just might be a future – when her past makes an ugly reappearance.

I adored Jorie and Luke together and individually. As Luke tries to hide his injury from his family Jorie steps in with some healing of her own. Watching this couple rediscover each other was such fun. There is a bit of suspense and mystery as it seems that Jorie is being targeted by a stalker. If you love a really good romance, a family that feels like – well – family right away, and a couple who just fits right together then you’d enjoy Counting on the Cowboy. I’m already anticipating the next story in the series.

I received this arc from Tule Publishing in exchange for an honest review. This is the second book about the Riverrun Ranch and the Claiborne Family. I read the first book but if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have been lost. This is the story of Jorie Russell and Luke Claiborne. Jorie runs a wildlife refuge on her land and works as a vet tech at the veterinary clinic in Last Stand. She was raised by her somewhat grumpy grandmother after her mother dumped her and left town. After her grandmother died, she inherited the land and the mobile home. She knew she was from the wrong side of town and that people talked about her so she tried to show them she wasn’t like her mother. She was best friends with Emma Claiborne and always had a crush on her older brother Luke from visiting at their ranch.

Luke returned to Last Stand after an injury in the military left him deaf in one ear. He had been a K-9 handler and had to give up his dog. He has joined the volunteer fire department along with his twin brother. He meets Jorie at a fire when she tries to rescue a cat she had been feeding and her kittens from a factory. Luke doesn’t remember Jorie until she reminds him of her friendship with his sister.

Jorie had a bad experience when she was 17 and at a party with older boys. Mason offered to drive her home and then nearly raped her. She was saved by the appearance of Luke’s twin, Evan. That experience affected her interaction with other men. Mason had been living in Austin but suddenly was back in Last Stand, much to Jorie’s horror. She has some car issues and Luke happened upon her and drove her home. She discovered someone had been at her wildlife preserve as she found cigarette butts. She suspects Mason since he smokes and still terrifies her. Luke stays the night on her sofa to make sure the person doesn’t return. Luke’s dad has him invite her over for a family dinner. It is apparent to the family how Jorie and Luke feel about each other. The evening is interrupted when Luke and Evan are called away to fight a fire at Jorie’s house. The question is who caused the fire?

This book has lots of sweet moments between Jorie and Luke as well as some steamy moments. There’s suspense, great family and friend interactions and some tearful moments. I give it 5 stars for the wonderful addition to Ms. Foley’s series. I highly recommend it.

Luke Claiborne has secrets that he doesn't want anyone to know. Especially anyone in Last Stand. He has served in the Army working as a K9 handler working with the Rangers in a variety of hot spots. On his last mission both he and his dog were injured in an explosion. Luke's injuries were enough to put him out of the service though. He is still struggling with this and trying to hide his secret.

Jorie Russell grew up on the wrong side of the wrong side of the tracks in Last Stand. But she has never let how she was treated hold her back. Jorie has always loved animals since they have never treated her differently. She has found work in Last Stand as a vet tech which helps her to fund her wildlife rescue she runs on the property left to her by her grandmother.

Jorie remembers Luke from growing up since she and his sister Emmaline were friends. Jorie is on her way to check on one of the pregnant feral cats she is trying to befriend when the warehouse catches fire. Luke has been helping out as a volunteer firefighter and encounters Jorie for the first time since he has come back to Last Stand. And this sets up a very entertaining, well thought out storyline.

Not everyone who comes back from war wounded has a visible handicap or scar. Ms. Foley very deftly handles this subject in this novel. It is a subject often ignored but more characters in novels and romances need to reflect this modern reality.

I really did enjoy this novel and am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I did receive a copy of this novel ahead of time from the publisher in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

I love when my reading goes 2 for 2. This is only the second book I’ve read by this author and I’ve loved them both. That’s a huge win in my mind.

In the first book of this series, Swipe Right for a Cowboy, we don’t meet Luke. He’s the brother that can’t make it home for his sister’s wedding. Man, did we miss out. Luke has his issues, for sure. But he’s also so kind and patient and empathetic. He may not think he’s those things, but his actions speak louder than words.

Jorie has a kind of sweet innocence about her that endeared her to me right away. She’s a strong woman; a fighter. I still found myself wanting to see her being taken care of. Everyone deserves to have someone to lean on, especially Jorie.

While there is a great chemistry between Jorie and Luke, there is also a sort of tenderness that melted my heart. I was rooting for them both and hoping they wouldn’t push each other away because of their own insecurities and fears. Or, worse, their hard-headedness. Of course, as this is a true romance, we definitely get an HEA for them.

I don’t know how I’ve missed out on this author for so long, but she won me over very quickly. Now, to find the time to read some of her previous works!

This book is a charming romance that is a little more small town than cowboy. I loved both main characters, Luke and Jorie, and the secondary characters--mostly other Clairbournes from past and future novels--are great too.

Luke is a retired military K-9 officer, back home at his family's ranch after being injured to the point where he'd be at desk duty if he stayed. He's equal parts hunky, kind, and capable, yum. He's a good match for Jorie-- who's crushed on him for years-- though I wish we'd seen more of his own abilities with animals, dogs in particular.

Jorie hasn't ever left the small Texas town, where she splits her time working as a vet tech and a wildlife rehabber. I was a little concerned at the beginning that she'd be portrayed as TSTL, putting herself and others in unnecessary danger to rescue animals, but that was not the case. I love that she's competent and confident with animals as it balances out the lingering insecurity she feels after being raised in a trailer on the "wrong" side of town.

The romance develops easily and without any angst. There's a vague promise of danger that disappointingly doesn't really go anywhere, at least not as I expected. I feel like Jorie's past wraps up a little too easily, hence the lack of a star in my rating.

In the end, this is book that is sweet over sultry, but I enjoyed it and wouldn't hesitate to read other books in this series or by this author.

I received a copy of this book for free. I'm writing this review voluntarily, and it reflects my honest opinion. Thanks!

We are back at the Riverrun Ranch and this time the story belongs to Luke Claiborne, and Jorie Russell.
Luke recently returned home after leaving the military due to an injury. He’s not sure what he’ll do with his life and still mourns the K-9 dog he had to leave behind.
While volunteering as a firefighter he encounters Jorie, who’s trying to sneak into a burning building so she can rescue a cat and her litter. Needless to say, that was not the best of meetings.
Unbeknown to Luke, Jorie, who was friend’s with his sister, has had a crush on him for years. But she’s a girl from the wrong side of the tracks .
Somehow a friendship develops as he sees how she devotes herself to rescuing wildlife .
The story is sweet, and at times heartbreaking but also heartwarming. It’s a story about a woman that has had a tough life and a man who is unsure of his future.
It’s also a story about family support in the form of the Claibornes.
This was another enjoyable story in this series . I am looking forward to what else the author has in store for us in the future.

Counting on the Cowboy the second of the Riverrun Ranch books by Karen Foley. I am nit much on instant love so this story was right for me since Jories and Luke have a connection from the past. Sure he saw her as his little sister’s friend while she had a crush on him but they knew each other just the same. Luke has returned home from the military somewhat at loose ends.

Another Last Stand, Texas novel that reminds us how tough the people of this community really are. Jorie looks as if she is sweet and pretty much a pushover but let her feel strongly enough she can dig in her heels. Take the opening fire scene as an example. Luke came across as an arrogant abrasive personality. While I would have wanted to do what Jorie was trying to do it was not safe, Luke was right. She needed to have him stop her but as the story progresses Luke may need her more.

Always enjoy my visits to this imaginary town. The was an enjoyable read from the tense beginning to the sweet ending.

An ARC of the book was given to me by Tule Publishing which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Now someone is stalking Jorie and Luke steps up to keep her safe everyone can see what they mean to one another but will these two ever realise that they are meant to be together You will have to read to see

The old saying, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” applies to this story. Jorie is totally dedicated to any and all animals – whether wild or tame. She’ll do whatever it takes to protect them and bring them back to good health. Even though she leads a pretty solitary life, she is not really alone but doesn’t realize this as yet. She has her many friends to provide emotional support. Then there’s one person who’d like to be more than a friend – Luke. He considers himself broken based from his military service though but willing to put himself out for Jorie. Somehow through these imperfect people with all their past baggage, they manage to not only fall in love but to heal their brokenness.

I really liked this book and can totally relate to Luke Claiborne. Luke lost his hearing in one ear because of an IED explosion and I am late life deaf due to something that can not be explained. He has to learn to over come his deafness and live with it in his new life and this is shown in this book so well. Author Karen Foley writes Luke's character very true to life and his interaction with Jordie a younger woman from Last Stand who has a passion for animals that shows and shines bright. She was years behind Luke in school but he remembers her because of her parents and home life. Life didn't change much for her except she has grown up beautiful and learned more about animals and seems hurt souls as well. Jordie can heal an critter or man with a gentle touch it seems. I do love Last Stand, TX.

Loved Luke and Jorie. Luke has returned to Last Stand, as an injured military police officer. His heart is broken for leaving his canine partner behind. Jorie's passion is rescuing injured wildlife and is always trying to prove her self better that how her mom was. She has always had a secret crush on Luke. As their friendship develops into much more, it will melt your heart.

A wonderful story that I had a hard time putting down. Luke has a tough exterior but has a heart of gold and will do anything to protect Jorie. Jorie has always felt she had to prove herself to everyone in the town but will soon find out how will liked she is. With the surprise visitor at the end brought tears to my eyes. Highly recommend.

Second in series and just a good as the first

I came across this author by getting the first book in the series (Swipe Right For a Cowboy) for free. After reading the first book, which was really good, I had to get the second. This one did not disappoint. Being a dog lover and a military spouse, I had to read this story of Jorie, vet tech and wildlife rehab and Luke, Military Police dog handler. The story was well written, flowed nicely, included snippets of the first story’s protagonist and led you to wanting to read the next in the series, which I also purchased and will be reading next. I loved how Jorie and Luke’s story progress. A definite read for those who enjoy a good romance novel in contemporary times.

“Counting on the Cowboy (Riverrun Ranch Book 2)”

This was a terrific book about a veteran who is waiting for his Military Dog to be discharged so he can finally get the dog back as a service dog,and a woman who is a wildlife rehabber ending up together with no plans on that happening. But the rehabber gets her cages ruined and her wildlife set free before that are ready, and she has no idea who did it.So the veteran decides to spend the night on a very uncomfortable cot to try and find out who’s doing this.
Did they find out who let the wildlife go? Did the veteran get his dog? Did they end up together? You’ll have to read this to find out what happens, and you’ll be glad you did!

I really enjoyed this story. The relationship between Luke and Jorie progressed in a believable fashion. Luke is definitely a good guy who respects Jorie. Jorie has a real affection for animals and many times feels more comfortable with them than with other people. Having been dumped at a young age upon her grandmother when her mother didn't want her, Jorie thinks that the townspeople view her as "less than" when in fact they don't. This affects her ability to trust others, but she finally comes to realize that not only Luke but the town as a whole really do value her. There's an element of whodunit in the plot, which is well-executed. Secondary characters, especially Luke's family, add to the story. It will be interesting to read Holt's story in the next book.

The h is very innocent and at times, I wondered how she worked and ran her wildlife business. So let me say, I did enjoy this story, and you will have to suspend your beliefs on some aspects. I have no problem recommending it because parts were very touching. Especially near the end at the festival, oh my goodness was so heartwarming!

Lovemaking outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5. Nice set up for future stories that I want to read, because I liked the characters in this story.

No cheating for our main couple, HEA, romantic, crude words used and the Lord's name a couple times, no cliffhanger, interesting main and secondary characters. I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to read. (ljb)

Jorie has loved Luke since she was a teenager hanging out with his little sister. He was older and did not notice her. Now he is back is Last Stand following an injury that ended his military career. When he runs into Jorie trying to rescue a mama cat from a burning building he realizes she is willing to risk her life as well as his. The more he runs into Jorie he can't help but want to get to know her. She is busy rescuing animals but Luke can tell that she is the one really in need of rescue. His rough attitude and harsh words don't scare off Jorie. Can she find her happily ever after with her long time crush? Fun read!

Jorie has been in love with Luke since they were teenagers. Originally from the wrong part of town, she now works in a vets' office and runs an animal rehab centre. Luke has returned from service with a hearing problem and now works as a volunteer fire fighter. When he prevents Jorie from rushing into a burning building, sparks fly.

I picked this up when it was free, and I'm glad I did. It's a well-written small town/cowboy romance. The characters are well fleshed out and likeable, and it's a good story without being overly dramatic.

I really enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.

Luke and Jorie’s story is one to completely lose yourself in...with all the feels that this this author’s book are so expert at bringing out. Karen Foley’s second book in the Riverrun Ranch series, Counting on the Cowboy, takes the reader on a journey of emotions...none richer than at the end of the story. Ms Foley’s books are also quite adept at building, very quietly, momentum towards the next story to come, which when it does, promises to be so rewarding...that being Holt’s.

This ARC book was complimentary, provided by the Publisher. I am voluntarily providing my honest review.

What a sweet and heartwarming story. This book is about a very strong woman who has had a hard life and a man that is broken. Luke and Jorie meet in an unconventional way but they develop a very solid friendship. From this friendship we see them healing and helping each other. The story line is full of romance, tension and even drama that will keep you reading way into the night. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I voluntarily reviewed this book in exchange for an honest review.

Furry friends and romance

The wildlife rehab and cute animals in this book made me fall in love almost as much as our main characters! It was so sweet to see Luke and Jorie’s interactions, him being protective and her trying to resist her attraction to him from childhood. And to see Luke’s family and then the whole community show their support? Fantastic! And it seems there is more to come with those other brothers. Yay!
