It’s hard to criticize such a work as it’s both well made on one hand and so conventional on the other. Fighting shounen were never known for their originality or variety but if was to describe the story and plot of the mawha, you’d think I am referring to a dozen renown manga shounen. So the story is quite typical and almost predictable to the most part, especially if you are accustomed to how shounen usually go. Typical teenager with latent power (blah-blah) gets attacked by monster and saved by supernatural girl (blah-blah) goes to a magic school where he trains and becomes stronger (blah-blah) is destined to save or destroy the world (blah-blah) has a dark side that comes out here and there (blah-blah). Nothing we haven’t seen before.

The pacing on the other hand is quite remarkable as it usually moves fast and drags little. If you can stand the typical plot, you will definitely not be bored while reading. Each chapter seems to progress the plot and it’s only the battles that end up being the main source of dragging.

Also, the scenario is made in a way to present problems and obstacles that are usually of mental nature and not of big bad monsters. The lead boy for example only struggles in order to save his life and that of his brother, while his mistress fights for honour amongst the various clans of creatures roaming the magic world and is even ordered to kill him herself is he messes up. In fact, all the characters just want a piece of heaven and that makes it feel far more likable than brain-dead muscular oafs who just want to rule the world or become the best fighters or something boring like that.

The art is quite good for a mawha, as the characters are both drawn simple and interesting in the same time, while the backgrounds are dressed in magic and goth motifs. I kinda dislike how always in such stories the females are oversexualized and the males are presented as macho but I guess I need to get to the right mindset. Anyways, the artwork is splendid if you are into magic and fantasy. The only real grip is the action scenes which are usually confusing as a loot of stuff happen at the same time where blood and clashes hide most of your view.

As much as I liked the fast pace and the deep character immersion, I still found a big chunk of the story as too contrived. I’ve seen the same things happening in so many similar shown in almost the exact way and usually with a better presentation that I ended up feeling like I am reading an imitation of other shows. Direct comparisons can be found in 3X3 Eyes, Bleach, D.Gray Man, and Rosario to Vampire. Also, most battles with secondary or mook enemies could be simply left out entirely. Furthermore, the ending of the mawha is not even an ending but a cliffhanger of sorts, proclaiming a sister series to continue the story. Only half of the objectives are resolved and usually only through the usual sudden power-up fad.

In overall, it is an enjoyable reading if you are not alienated by the typical tropes found in it, as well as the open ending. I wouldn’t say there is much reread value in here or not even many memorable scenes or characters, just because you have probably seen the same archetypes doing it elsewhere in a fancier way.

Manga scolastico "fantasy":

Unexpectedly good! I had this sitting around, so I decided to read it...and read three volumes in one shot. -wry- Volume one introduces Jae Hyuk's unique situation to us, and he's a good-enough guy to tug the heartstrings. After being killed-then-"Oops-a-daisy, I'm reviving you..as an undead!", followed by being forced to leave his sick brother, THEN having his heart ripped out, you'd think Jae Hyuk would succumb to the call of Braiinnnsss.

The art for this manhwa was surprisingly-good, and actually looked more like Japanese manga than traditional manhwa. (The latter of which sometimes has a rather distinctive style.)

(For non-Korean readers, volume 1 was done by Meep-scans, and can be obtained via IRC: Lurk.)
