I read this out loud with my daughter before breakfast.

An odd choice for a morning read aloud, perhaps, but she was sleepy enough to cuddle in and listen while a subject she tolerates was explained. It worked.

The explanations are thorough but brief. I was worried it was a little dry, even for me, until we got to the page on partial sums and mental math. Math is a language. Learning to converse in and understand the terms of the language, beyond the numbers themselves is a feat! She now feels more comfortable in some of the technical language of the discipline and less afraid. A cozy blanket and a read-aloud without interrogation or a worksheet to follow helped.

A nice introduction, and refresher, to basic addition.

Might help when teaching my nephew about this.
