About the author

Arkady Vayner (1938 - 2009) was a Russian playwright and author. After graduating from high school with honors, he entered the Moscow Aviation Institute, and later joined the law faculty at Moscow State University.

Together with his brother, Georgy Vayner, he is the author of many works of detective stories, often taken from their own forensic practice. In addition, Vainer wrote plays and scripts for film and television.

Уже по "Эре Милосердия " было понятно, что Вайнеры отнюдь не рядовые ремесленники, но кто мог предположить что именно они создадут лучшую книгу про гэбню, да ещё и в формате фантасмагорического плутовского романа? Написана она совершенно фантастическим , живым языком, благодаря чему проглатывается почти мгновенно, а бывший полковник МГБ Павел Хваткин, которого жизнь спустя двадцать с лишним лет ухватила таки за задницу - один из самых интересных и отталкивающих героев русской литературы.

Actually, it is authors' take on how Michoels was eliminated, part of larger purge of Jewish Antifascist Committee. Historically, it is not very accurate and omits the discussion of several crucial figures and several quite ambigious steps undertaken by the leadership of the Committee but it is melodrammatically catchy.

Comment raconter un chef d'œuvre de 770 pages ? Pas facile. Alors très bref résumé: la vie d'un tortionnaire du NKVD sous Staline, rattrapé 20 ans plus tard par son passé. Extraordinaire description de la terreur à la Loubianka. Énorme polar. Cultissime en Russie.
