Take a walk on the wild side . . . It's well known that humans aren't the only creatures whose disembodied spirits can remain earthbound after death. For centuries, ghostly animal apparitions have returned from far beyond the grave to warn of danger, comfort a bereaved owner--even to seek revenge against those who have mistreated them. Phantom Felines and Other Ghostly Animals features the best true stories from all over the world, presenting a chilling picture of the many animal spirits that still walk among the living. Some of the tales here will send you to sleep with the lights on, others will warm your heart and put a smile on your face, and still others can only be described as completely bizarre. Many feature cats, which will not surprise anyone who has ever owned one of these mysterious creatures. There is the phantom tabby that routinely haunts a paneled first-floor lecture room of a restored Tudor mansion in Somerset, England. The ghostly cat once made a particularly memorable appearance during a crowded lecture when it entered the room, sat down, curled its tail around its paws--and, like a wisp of smoke, vanished into thin air, giving the crowd quite a shock. From cats to dogs to horses, birds, and even wild animals, the true tales in this unusual book will give you a glimpse into a world that is much closer than you ever realized. So whether you are a devoted pet owner, just love a good ghost story, or maybe even have seen a long-departed animal skulking around, Phantom Felines and Other Ghostly Animals is sure to chill and delight. I received a copy of this book when my short story, The Breakfast Companion, was published inside. A lot of the stories in this anthology of ghostly animal stories are mostly, "I feel my cat is around me all the time" sorts. However, there are a few that are pretty good. As a person that loves ghost stories and horror novels, I had hoped for more chills than this book provides. But, hey, at least I got my name in print! Thumb up, Gerina, for including a wide array of stories.
This was an actual interesting read and one that I wouldn't have thought was even possible thus it was educational at the most. As a result the stories were rather new and not the oft repeated ones that many readers get when they read ghost tales with the exception of a few "urban legend"-types that the author would sometimes place within the sections to add to the paranormality essence of the book itself.
Once book was past the introductory chapter, it was then split into three different sections with cat stories being the more predominant and the first section. This of course was followed by a dog section and then a much smaller section which was focused on other animals. Each story that was included was given a name followed by the author's name while then giving the reader a brief history usually of events leading up to the sad demise of the said animal and what then followed that convinced the family member(s) or others who experienced the events that animals can still be caught on this side of the veil.
All in all it was an interesting read and one that does bring the reader to question what we think we know about the world around us as well as death. If the introductory chapter could have been included in the back instead with its information about ghost hunting and answering ghostly questions then it may have really a great book to keep. Instead it is time to find this book a new home with someone who may truly enjoy its contents.
This book delves into my two favorite topics: ghosts and pets. The first section of the book focuses on phantom cats, then the other sections focus on dogs and other animals such as rabbits and gerbils.
The collection of stories are mostly from people who’ve experienced encounters from their dearly departed pets. There were also stories about famous haunted locations with animal ghosts.
The book is mostly a feel good read about knowing pets can visit from the afterlife.
A good collection of first-person stories about encounters with dogs, cats, and others who have passed. Dunwich provides background information on the paranormal in different sections.
This isn't a book of thrills and chills, but more of a collection of personal encounters that will inspire or comfort some, and intrigue others.
