German publisher Karl Baedeker (1801-1859) established a series of guidebooks in 1835. His son, Karl Baedeker (1837-1911) continued to publish the namesake guidebooks to countries. Eventually the firm and its name were bought by MairDumont, which publish the famous Baedeker travel guides today.
Every so often an entry makes one sit up at think. Page 33, the entry for Friedrichshafen states that the Zeppelin Airship sheds are only 10 min North of the town station, but ‘no visitors’. Even in 1928 the recent memory of the Zeppelin raids over Britain must have remained painful.
Innocence is swiftly restored. A little further down, the entry for Lindau, observes that the hotels are ‘often crowded in Summer.’ Ahha. Back to REAL problems!
