The winner of one of France s most prestigious literary prizes, this is an epic historical novel which tells the story of Genghis Khan, legendary ruler of the Mongolian steppes..I was sixteen years old, with a perfectly honed body and a tremendous desire to destroy. Thus opens the story of Genghis Khan whose name alone conjures up the steppes and viscera of the barbarian heart. The novel opens as Tèmudjin, son of a murdered chief and the future Khan, chases after horse rustlers on the steppe with his friend Bo ortchou. They become blood brothers and it is Bo ortchou who relates the story of this dispossessed young man s struggle to regain the inheritance of his father the Khan the chief of chiefs. THE BLUE WOLF narrates Temudjin s early years; his defeat of the Tartars, the most feared enemies of his clan and his suppression and integration of the tribes of the steppes. It ends with him being crowned King of the oceans Genghis Khan. However, he is now paranoid and suspicious; his hunger for power has lead to blood-lust and a growing mistrust of old friends and allies. Bo ortchou becomes a virtual exile in the new kingdom ruled by a man on the path to despotism. In THE BLUE WOLF Homeric also writes lyrically about the Mongolian people with their love of horses and women, and with impeccable research evokes beautifully and chillingly the history of this period.
I actually feel guilty for liking this novel so much- It's told by a narrator that tells his story about the Mongol wolf (Genghis Khan) a story of his loyalty to his khan and following him on a path of war, destruction, rape etc... I can’t help it, I still really like it- the novel is so well- written and as time passes the narrator really grows on you (despite the fact that I don't approve his actions). It's been a long time since I've read this novel and I remember it so clearly. Maybe I wouldn't be as impressed by it now as I was then, but I'll remember it fondly...Ah, the joys of reading...especially the joy when you're really surprised by what you are reading. I remember I had thought about it while swimming and that says something because for me the point of swimming is not to think too much and to relax. I don't plan to reread it though; I think I would like it less if I did. I’m not sure, but I’d like to keep the impression I have now. Btw I didn't read it in original (French) but this is the only edition I've found on goodreads.
To summarize- I can't describe how well- written it is: poetical, moving, convincing...It's all a history fiction should be, it feels authentic (I'm not saying it really is, I cannot judge the authenticity since I'm not an expert on Mongolian culture).
Just finished the book... i loved it, the author give us more details about Genghis Khan time. From his writing it's clear that he has enough knowledge about our custom, culture and history. As the historical fiction, the book generally follows the historic events, buuuuutt.. it has more emotion, love, untold connections between the characters and twist of their fates. I think the core of the story was friendship between mongolian men. In the end, i'm left with questions.. was the relationships fictional? which of them was historical? ...
Few months ago read the first page of the book, and put it back assuming the book was just one of those books of Chingis Khaan. I'm very glad i picked up the book again. Great story. I'm happy that i found out more about Boorchi. He is the HERO.
