The dragon knights must venture into an abandoned demesne, corrupted by a dragon’s veil twenty years prior and now overgrown and teeming with strange beasts. Their goal is to acquire a treasure — the royal pendant of Faiza.
On this quest are three members of the order. Two knights — Ralena and Snejana. Plus a trainee, not yet a squire named Jo.
So you have the main storyline which is an adventure and 3 character subplots.
There is also a prologue wherein a band of mercenaries, previously hired to steal the pendant, are hunted and killed by unknown creatures in the jungle. This builds suspense and the mercenaries also have a role to play later.
Snejana is rude, arrogant, and thoughtless.
Ralena is haunted by her past, when she alone survived the dragon attack on the court of Faiza.
Jo is a bratty girl who doesn’t want to be a knight.
The character drama is largely a distraction from the main plot. Lots of bickering and angst that overshadows the threat posed by the twisted children of the veil.
SPOILER
The knights face a series of obstacles — dense jungle, giant spiders, killer birds, flying snakes, creatures that live in the walls, rotting floorboards, little spiders, and for the finale a bunch of creepy lizard things with beady eyes. All these creatures are the byproduct of the veil from 20 years ago. Offspring of veil creatures and local fauna that created bizarre and dangerous new species. This idea was interesting and added to the lore of the series.
After being imprisoned, beaten, and threatened with rape by her cousin, Snejana learns some humility.
After again triumphing alone, Ralena realizes that it doesnt matter what others think of her — she is confident in her own worth.
We learn that Jo isnt at bad as she first seemed; Snejana is the bad one. Jo is just an average girl, forced by her parents to be a knight, who wants to elope and open a retail shop. In the Faiza palace dungeon, she finds a bag of gold that gives her the financial freedom to leave the order.
In a final ironic twist, the pendant they were searching for is also in the bag. But since the knights didnt bother to tell Jo what it looked like, she thinks it’s junk and gives it away. lol.
The artist, Paty, does a superb job of differentiating the 3 main characters and giving them distinct facial expressions/personalities, especially Jo, who is very animated. Her smirks and sneers and other reactions add humor to the scenario.
