This is the story of Operación Jaque (Operation Checkmate), the account of the Colombian Army's daring and ingenious undercover operation in which intelligence officers convinced FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) radio operators and leaders to hand over to a non-existent European humanitarian group 15 hostages (including Ingrid Betancourt and three American civilians) and a FARC commander and his bodyguard. Although US participation was claimed by the author to be very limited, in Out of Captivity it was alleged that US Special Forces were within peeping and smelling distance of at least one camp.

I thoroughly enjoyed the behind the scenes information about the rescue that had so little working in its favor. The bravery of the men and women who were so eager to risk their lives for others will take your breath away.

The book showed my the true purpose of my life: someone somewhere wants me to buy a beer for every soldier and policeman in Colombia. My mission has only just started. ¿Otra cerveza, compinche?

How to make your enemy think you're one of his kind, get inside his house unarmed, take his most valuable item, being convinced that you are doing to him a good deed.
One of the most spectacular military intelligence operations in history, if not the most. Right next to the trojan horse.

This is great account of the real events to recues 15 hostages (including Ingrid Betancourt), operation checkmate, that took place in Colombia in 2008. I loved the format counting cack in days to the D day, the rescue day. It was a very ingenious plot that made me admire military intelligence for the very first time in my life. The book is clear, well-written and impossible to put down.
