Influencer, Rell Campbell, just found out that half of her followers find her dull and uninteresting. So when her new neighbor, Jansen Davis - someone who left his old life to start a new one - asks her to be his fake fiance for a company dinner - she accepts, not quite sure what she's gotten herself into. The only condition for Rell is that he has to agree to show face on her social media, giving her followers exactly what they want, but when the first date is a complete disaster - Rell quickly changes her mind, but Jansen can't seem to get his mind off of Rell. Jansen came to town looking for no distractions - but that doesn't stop him from looking for a reason to jump over the fence and into Rellslife.
Rell and Jansen weave through situations that bring them closer together - and apart - will that fence stay in their way, or will those wooden pieces get knocked down?

This book is a super sweet, feel-good romance without all the cheesiness. Jansen is definitely book boyfriend material, ugh, with his country music and truck, flannel and jeans, and cranky sweetness. And Rell is a boss babe! I love their chemistry together and how driven and supportive they were with their careers.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and it was an easy read with some predictable moments.
I would definitely recommend this book to others, and I look forward to reading more books by Holly!✨️
Thank you, Holly, for the eARC copy of this book. This is my honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 Over The Fence, by Holly Whitworth Pub date: March 18, 2023
First, I want to say thank you so much to @hollywhitwrites for giving me the opportunity to read this ARC! I can’t wait to read more of your work! 🫶
This is a book I NEEDED after a streak of “just okays”! Rell and Jansen have serious chemistry, and I love how their relationship develops. I can usually guess the endings of a lot of books, but I couldn’t quite figure out how they were gonna make it work in this one until I read the ending! I stayed up a little too late to finish because I had to know what was going to happen! I will definitely be reading more of Holly’s work SOON! 💕
Tropes: -grumpy/sunshine -fake dating -close proximity (neighbors)
Best things about this book: -I really liked the whole Influencer thing, and that Rell wasn’t snotty about it! -Rell and Bree’s friendship is something I think a lot of people wish they had! -I’m not usually a fan of grumpy/sunshine, but Jansen was grumpy in a cute way! -the issues in the book were real world issues, not overly dramatic ones that would probably never happen -the first spicy scene had me messaging Holly to tell her good job! 😅😂
DEFINITELY read this! Trust me! ✨
*I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
❤️Be sure to check out Holly’s other books, The Deal Breaker and A Love That Blooms, both available on Amazon.
🗣️ Support Indie authors! They put SO much love and work into what they do!
⚠️CW (list may not be exhaustive): some moderately spicy scenes, adultery
Over the Fence is the first in the By The Threads series, and my second book of Holly Whitworth's that I have read. Rell & Jansen's story was one I enjoyed from the beginning to the end. I knew right from the get go that these two belonged together!
Rell is a social media influencer struggling to connect with her followers. Jansen is new to San Francisco after making a move for a fresh new start. He also happens to be Rell's new neighbor who is in need of a fake finance and fast to make a good first impression on his new boss and that's where Rell comes in. In return, Rell uses Jansen to try to connect with her followers by making it seem like she is in a relationship.
Rell & Bree are absolute friendship goals! They fit so well together with how they run Rell's social media account and how they are their for each other!
Highly recommend to all that love the tropes featured in this book! Holly is a sweet indie author that you should definitely go and support!
Featured Tropes:
Fake Fiance Forced Proximity (Neighbors) Strangers to Lovers Touch of Grumpy x Sunshine He falls first Meant to be Dual POV's HEA
This was such a sweet love story but it's so much more than that.
It's about life and goals and careers. It's about finding that person you connect with at a time where you're life and career is about to head in a different direction. And trying to navigate those choices and figuring out how to make it all work despite the unknowns and the obstacles.
I connected with this story on another level because ironically this is EXACTLY how my own love story began. 22 days after signing military enlistment papers, I met my now wife and it was difficult trying to decide whether or not to start something months before leaving.
It's true when they say you find the one when you least expect it, when your not looking for anything. And when it's right, nothing can change that.
I also wanted to use this review to talk about the author's growth. It is absolutely 100% evident in this book how Holly has grown as a writer. It has shown from her first book to her second and now this one. So proud of her.
I absolutely loved this book. The sweet love story, the fake dating, you could feel the love between the characters. I’d also like a porch swing bow. Holly has come so far with her writing, I loved her other books so I knew we were in for a treat with this one. Support your indie authors, they do it all and they deserve the praise especially getting to watch them flourish into seasoned authors. Can’t wait for her future books!
Thank you so much @hollywhitwrites for sending me an early copy 💗💗 I was beyond excited when I saw it in my inbox 🥰
This had everything you could want in a romance novel 👏🏻 and I fell in love with the characters as soon as I met them!
Rell & Jansen were both fiercely independent, & passionate about their lives! The way they balanced each other was great, & I absolutely loved the friendship between Rell & Bree ☺️
Other things I LOVED: ❣️fake dating ❣️close proximity (neighbours) ❣️he falls first ❣️grumpy/sunshine ❣️strong female characters
Overall verdict: A fun, flirty page turner, that puts a smile on your face 💕
I am looking forward to more from Holly! And don’t forget to add this to your TBR! It comes out March 18th✨
Holly sent me her new book as an ARC and I am so sad it took me this long to read it. To say I'm obsessed is an understatement! There isn't anything about this book I don't love. Rell and Jensen are by far my most favorite characters ever! The storyline was fantastic, I think I squealed my whole way through the book! I loved the fake dating, I felt like I was there and am devastated it's over! I cannot wait for more people to experience this book ❤️ it has my heart for forever!
Over the Fence was the rom-com I needed to start off February!! It’s a strangers to lovers, fake dating, grumpy/sunshine, dual POVs banger! I could picture Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey acted out this on the big screen and I loved every second of it!
The book is from the prospective of Rell, a social media influencer, and Jansen, a construction guy that is new to the neighborhood trying to start a new life. When Jansen needs a fake fiancé for a dinner with his boss, he asks his next door neighbor Rell to help him out.
I loved the characters so much! The romance was a nice slow burn and just made my heart so happy! I can’t wait to see what Whitworth comes out with in the future.
Y’alll! This book is so C U T E! I absolutely loved the premise and was sucked in quickly! Rell is a social media influencer struggling to connect with her followers. Most of the people her age are getting engaged, married and having babies. Jansen is a construction manager new to town who just so happens to move next door. He needs a fake fiancé (and fast) and Rell could use a guy to make her platform more exciting. Enter all the fake dating goodness that I love so much! This one had hilarious, laugh out loud moments(hello park scene 🤣), major swoon, and was so bingeable. The characters were great and relatable with fun chemistry. I equally loved Rell and Jansen 🥰. If you love fake dating, grumpyxsunshine you definitely want to check this one out!
And let’s not forget the stunner of a cover that Holly did HERSELF 😍
@hollywhitwrites , I’m so proud of you, friend! Your stories have always sucked me in but get better with each book. Thank you for sending me this one! 🫶
Tropes: Fake Dating Forced Proximity He Falls First
This is Holly’s third book with more on the way and so far this is my favorite!
First off, Rell and Bree are friendship goals. I love how devoted they are to each other and that no matter what, they have each others backs. That’s the kind of friendship we should all strive for!
Rell is hardworking, kind, funny, beautiful, and very down to earth - even with her influencer work.
Enter Jansen - swoon - Rell and Bree’s new hot neighbor. Jansen is the broody construction worker we all love. He’s determined to make a good impression on his new boss and Rell is just the girl to help him.
Both have been hurt in the past, but maybe this fake relationship they’ve created isn’t all that fake. And maybe they can help each other to move forward and find their real forever.
I don’t want to spoil all the sweet, fun, and hot moments, so I’ll just end this review by saying I loved Rell and Jansen and you should definitely get Over the Fence ASAP! 💕
I really really wanted to like this book but oh my goodness was the writing bad. Textbook definition of telling rather than showing which is something you almost never want to do. I tried and tried to give this book a shot, but it definitely read like a 13-year old's Wattpad upload. Th grammar was not good and the writing was painful to read. A book does not need to have beautiful prose and amazing poetry to be enjoyable, especially not a romance. However, it needs to at least be readable, and this was not readable. These are self-published and I'd love, love, if the author takes a writing course, class, workshop or even works with an editor. The ideas are solid, but the execution is not the best.
A fiery twist on a classic fake dating scenario, Over the Fence is a contemporary romance delivering an abundance of heartfelt moments, an array of interesting (and lovable) characters, and a satisfying mix of sweet and spicy.
Jansen was hardworking and sexy, and he doted on—and endlessly supported—Rell.
I loved the two together.
Not only does this book offer everything romance, it nudges readers to contemplate life, what truly matters, and what is always meant to be.
If you enjoy:
*Fake dating *A mix of sweet and spicy *San Francisco/Cali settings *Sexy MMCs *Influencer/Fashion Designer FMCs *Love against the odds
I rarely DNF books, I’ve must have read hundreds and this makes 1 of 2 books I’ve ever deliberately started and not finished
Almost as if it was written by AI, I tried to give it a shot but I found the dialogue between them to be painful to read, sounded like they were both talking to a brick wall
Does he live under a rock that he didn’t know she was an influencer? Is she that dumb to think that he wouldn’t find out??? Smh

Rell is a very popular influencer on The Gram with the help of her best friend and roommate, Bree. They notice that a new neighbor is moving in and his name is Jensen.
Jensen is from Kansas City and he moved to California for his job. Before moving, his boss Jay knew that Jensen is in a relationship and was planning on getting engaged. Jensen never updated his boss that he no longer has a girlfriend and is most definitely not engaged, but Jay invited Jensen to dinner and was told to bring his fiancée. Jensen couldn’t say no since he is trying to impress his boss.
While Rell is outside and notices Jensen, they strike up a conversation and Jensen asks Rell to be his fake fiancée for this dinner. She thinks it over and realizes she can also benefit with having a boyfriend for The Gram. It seems to be a win win situation for them, so she plays along.
What truly happens with Rell and Jensen? Are they THAT dedicated to their jobs to make this fake relationship look real?
Holly did an amazing job with the relationships between each of the characters in this book. There was great character development that every character were important in the story no matter how small the part was. I was pretty sad when the book ended, not because I felt like there needed to be more, but I really enjoyed Holly’s storytelling!!
This ARC was kindly sent in exchange for an honest review.
𝑷𝑳𝑶𝑻: Jansen is new to town and has found himself telling his boss he has a fiancé. Ooop! When invited to a company dinner he approaches new neighbour and influencer Rell, to play the part. It’s a win, win, situation as Rell needs a sparkly beau to show off on her social media.
So this was a seriously fun, and flirty read that was more sweet than spicy and I had such a 𝐅𝐔𝐍 time reading it.
Fake dating has to be one of my 𝐅𝐀𝐕𝐎𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐄 tropes and this one was so frickin cute! The way Jansen doted on Rell was dreaaaamy, you could see from the off that he fell pretty quickly and he would do anything for that girl.
I adored the premise of this book, that there is that moment of being in the 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞, 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, which sets in motion the path they both need to be on. Even if that path splits from time to time, they always wind up back where they need to be.
I am very much a believer in soulmates and that everyone has that one person that makes them whole and despite both Jansen and Rell being at very different stages in their lives, going in two completely different directions, they were the missing piece of their lives that they each didn’t know they were looking for 🫶🏼
Over the Fence by Holly Whitworth Release date: March 18th, 2023 Rating: ★★★★
Read if you like: ・ Fake dating ・ Dual POV ・ Open door romance ・ Grumpy male mc
“How did I get so lucky with you?” “You made me jump over the fence.”
Over the Fence is a sweet, bingeable romance you don’t want to miss! Thank you Holly Whitworth for graciously gifting me an early copy to read and review!
*slight spoilers ahead*
I am a huge fan of bookstagram/influencer main characters and Rell did not disappoint one bit! At first, I was skeptical because I do not trust people who do hot yoga. Just kidding…In all seriousness, Rell is a strong, sociable, and kind woman who strives for professional and personal advancement 100% of the time.
Jansen, on the other hand, can be quite grumpy at times. He is mysterious, reserved, and mildly afraid of babies? Jansen was my favorite part of the book, hands down: the fence jumping, the in-and-out burger, the deer head, the flowers, the chocolate for Bree, the list just goes on and on.
I finished this book in one sitting last weekend, and it was everything I needed it to be. Overall, this swoon-worthy story about two neighbors whose fake love turns real is the perfect quick read for my romance-lovers.
Holly, Thank you so much for sharing this sweet story with me before it’s out in the world! I absolutely adored Jansen and Rell, and saw their chemistry from the beginning- I mean she went out in the rain to see if he needed help- HELLO YES PLEASE! OTH references- Yep! San Francisco as the backdrop- it was so nostalgic for me as I lived in the city for 10 years. And Fake Dating-sign me up!! I loved watching their love for each grow slowly.
This was my first read by Holly, and it was so so cute!! Such a good little rom-com. Rell and Bree have such a cute friendship, I loved the dynamic between the two of them. And then Jansen 🤩🤩 he is the book boyfriend we all want and need. There’s all my favorite tropes; fake fiancé/dating, forced proximity (neighbors), grumpy x sunshine. I just loved it sm
I have read two other books of Hollys so when I was given a chance to read a third?! Wow! This one blew it out the park for me. Watching these characters take a strange chance and grow just blew my mind. Not to mention, the random jaw drops. 10/10 would recommend.. I read it in one sitting and could not put it down!!
The best book of Hollys yet!! Such a sweet, fake dating, filled with emotion and romance with some spice! Didn’t want to stop reading once I started!!!
Read this ARC in one sitting because I simply couldn't put it down. The characters in this book were very well written, and I loved every second! Add this immediately to your TBR 📚
Summary:
Rell has a significant following as an influencer and enjoys posting and creating content with her long-time friend Bree. When her account all of the sudden starts getting messages about being boring, she knows she has to do something to stop herself from losing tons of followers.
Jansen has just relocated to San Francisco for work and purchased a cute bungalow house with a pool in the backyard. When his boss requests he show up with a date to a work dinner, he has to get creative.
Perhaps he can ask his cute new neighbor for a favor? Perhaps Rell also needs a favor? Read Over the Fence for a cute, romantic story about two people following their dreams and having a little fun along the way 💕
I loved this book. It has so many classic tropes. Next door neighbors. Grumpy guy, sunshiny girl. Fake dating/fiancés. It’s also really hysterical- delivers on romcom feels.
Jansen and Rell make a fake dating deal that turns into a connection & real chemistry. the duo pov gives the reader the insider look on both of their actual circumstances, past heart breaks, current feelings, hopes and dreams. I love this writing style!! The characters and the storyline were so relatable and believable, you will connect with and fall in love with them both!
Holly has grown in leaps and bounds as an author and self publisher in this book. She even dipped her toes into writing some spice and it delivers!
I can’t wait to continue this series with some of the side characters like Rells best friend Bree! Will be recommending and resharing this one while I wait for the next instalment
Fake fiancé, forced proximity, strangers to lovers, he falls first, dual POVs and a HEA? What's not to love. Rell is an influencer who isn't connecting with her followers as much these days and Jensen is a construction manager trying to start his life over in a new place. After meeting in the rain one night, he ask's her to be his fake fiancé in front of his boss and boss's wife. What does she get out of this? She gets to post photos of them together to her account, giving her audience what they really want to see, along with her normal content. But the more time they spend together, the more they wonder if maybe what they are feeling isn't just fake anymore. I absolutely love the banter, the sweet, adorable and funny moments included in the novel. This is an incredibly swoony and bingeable read.
Over The Fence is a fake relationship, strangers-to-lovers romance between social media influencer Rell Cambell and the neighbour next door Jansen Davies. I am a sucker for the fake relationship trope and the cover for this book drew me in right away, it is so stunning!! Rell and her BFF Bree run a social media account together, Rell being the face of the account and Bree working hard behind the scenes. With 1.5 million followers they are doing well but unfortunately being in the public eye comes with both ups and downs as the girls learn first hand when someone posts some unkind comments about them, calling their account dull and resulting in the loss of followers.
Almost as if the universe was sending them a sign a new neighbour moves in. Jansen Davies is excited to be leaving Kansas City and the memories it holds behind and to be starting over in San Fransisco. When he arrives on a rainy evening the girl next door invites him in to stay dry and as it turns out this encounter would change the trajectory of both their lives. He is determined to make a good impression on his new boss but unfortunately his boss believes he is engaged and on a whim Jansen asks Rell if she would pretend to be his fiancée … Rell agrees but in return she asks to post some photos of them together on her The Gram account to hopefully change her followers perception of her.
This is a light and easy read, the main characters are for the most part very likeable and I love the modern setting with Rell being an influencer. The chemistry between them is obvious and the book takes a very believable turn from fake relationship to real feelings. I really enjoyed how a lot of the focus was on Rells success as an entrepreneur and her close friendship with Bree.
I did feel the characters lacked some depth, I would have loved to know more about their families and backgrounds. Both characters make some rather big life decisions and it doesn’t seem like family or a social network really factors in and I would love to know why that is. Overall an enjoy able book, it doesn’t go too deep so it would be perfect for vacation reading.
This is the firsts book I’ve read by Holly Whitworth and her writing style differs from what I usually read which took a little time getting used to. At time I found it a little abrupt. I also felt that while it is a dual POV book the characters seemed very similar in their internal monologue which perhaps was intentional on the authors part. Again an enjoyable book and lovely characters.
Thank you to the author Holly Whitworth for the eARC in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
