Fellow F.D.O.s (future dog owners) will delight in Izzy’s quest to secure a furry best friend with help from pals Judy and Stink—and a mysterious letter writer.
Fluffy dogs. Scruffy dogs. Pug-faced dogs. Ugh-faced dogs. Izzy Azumi has dogs on the brain! She already has a goldfish, a South American pink-toe tarantula, and two human best friends. But fish can’t learn tricks, spiders can’t cuddle, and Stink and Judy just aren’t fuzzy enough. Will Izzy Azumi ever see her wish come true? All bets are off . . . until Izzy’s father invites a certain sibling pair to help stage a surprise for their friend. This latest entry in a series for fledgling readers will have younger Judy Moody fans—especially those who long for a dog of their own—yelping for joy.
"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."
For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."
Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."
More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.
Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.
Judy and Stink's best friend Izzy really, really wants a dog. She has a pet fish and a pet tarantula and is pet sitting for an iguana, but none of them is very cuddly or walkable and trick training doesn't go very well with any of them. Izzy has asked her parents for a dog, but her mom says no and her dad just says maybe...which Izzy thinks means no. Will the day ever come for her dreams to come true?
Once upon a time, back when I was a little girl, I wanted a pet cat the way Izzy wants a pet dog in this, so it reads very authentically for me. I like how supportive Judy and Stink are, and how they try to help her make the best of the present while anticipating a someday future. The big reveal for when Izzy does get a pet is creatively done, and I like that Judy and Stink were invited to be a part of it.

It’s always refreshing when a popular series retains its quality and appeal long into its run, and this 14th offering in the Judy Moody and Friends books for newly independent readers happily demonstrates that point. Izzy, a young African American neighbor of Judy and Stink, is an animal lover who desperately wants a dog. Ever the optimist, she declares herself to be a F.D.O (Future Dog Owner). Many readers will identify with Izzy’s family dynamics; McDonald casually references her mother’s apartment and her dad’s house. Colorfully cheerful computer-generated illustrations grace each page, including two wordless two-page spreads where details advance the narrative. It is satisfying to see Izzy taking center stage here, rather than playing the role of sidekick in order to check the diversity box. Perhaps we can look forward to an Izzy Azumi spinoff series?
Izzy Azumi is a friend of Judy and Stink Moody. Izzy loves dogs, any kind of dog, all dogs. She cannot wait to have her very own dog, but only if she can convince her dad to let her get one. Their house even has an old doghouse in the yard, all ready to welcome Izzy's future pet now. What can Izzy do to change Dad's mind?
The illustrations are in full color and the font is big making this a good book for young readers of chapter books. Pet lovers, especially dog lovers, will thoroughly enjoy this book.
The most adorable, suspense-built, endearing story of a young girl's (Izzy) passionate desire to own her own dog. Each event she and her two friends, Judy Moody (yes, THAT Judy Moody) and Stink experience with Izzy revolves around her desire to own a dog.
Judy and Stink spend the book hanging out with their friend Izzy who really wants a dog. She has some other pets and is also watching Rocky's iguana. Cute book.
